First car without a dipstick and I will openly admit .. I hate it.
So .. I just did an oil change. As is my custom when doing oil changes, I go a little low to allow for any residual that might be in the car. So I did my check and this is what it shows me.
I would be most appreciative if someone with more Mini knowledge than I can tell me about what this means as far as additional oil. Is this 4oz, 12??
I certainly don't want to go over but I don't know what this amount of oil means as far as quantity. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
As long as the level is above the MIN line, then don't add any. If the level is at the MIN line, the car will tell you to add oil. According to the owners manual, only add 1 quart if oil level is displayed as LOW, and repeat the measurement.
Also, if I am reading the owners manual correctly, the oil level is monitored continuously, not only when you initiate the level check. The car should warn you when the oil level is detected low. I had heard that Mini added this due to the issues they had with the N14/N18 engines.
Confirming here what @njaremka said about the oil level being monitored while driving. When I have run long on my oil changes I have had an alert pop, while mid-drive and not necessarily shortly after driving -- I'm talking deep into the drive -- that I have hit the MIN level.
Also, it has looked to me like that readout, when it is between MIN and MAX, may be imprecise. I swear every reading I've ever seen has been either at the 1/4, 1/2, or 3/4 point between MIN and MAX (when it's been in between rather that at full top or bottom). With that in mind I would similarly not put anything in until/unless it hits MIN; and I would be sure be precise about putting in stated capacity at each oil change (works like clockwork for my 2017 F56 S).
