Part ID Please - Broken hatch latch

A canvas bag got caught in the hatch latch. I found this piece bent and all but snapped off. Can you tell me what it does, if it's super important and if so, is it user replaceable or a trip to the shop?

Thanks.

It sure looks a lot like a zipper pull... not saying it is, but it looks like one no question

I mean, now that you mention it. It was stuck fast to the latch in such a way that it looked like it was part of it. I didn't get a chance to examine it closely as it broke off quickly, but it was really stuck fast and in perfect alignment, which is why I thought it was part of the unit.

I'll go look again, but it seems likely I won't have any 'splainin to do to my wife about her baby being less than perfect now. Thanks, all.
