I like the look of the smoked side markers but worry about not having a reflective surface which I assume is a legal regulation. If I got in an accident would it impact insurance claims for example.
Technically its the lighting that is a legal regulation. But yeah, you can say it reflects untainted when you forget to turn on your lights at night!!!
The irony, is that US drivers dont want the side markers, and EU drivers do want them!!
I even thought about purchasing the wheel arches from MINI UK since they don’t have the side markers but did not want to deal with New York State inspection or insurance issues if there was ever an accident
I have 2021 SE and I bought my smoked side markers from eBay. The harness did require a little bit of effort to push in completely but they have been working just fine since April of last year.

So, anyone ever try lowering the side marker voltages in Bimmercode?
Me thinks they are a little too bright.
They light the pavement. I feel like I'm driving an underglow.
For those that dont know the term underglow!!
No, thats not mine!!
I remember way back when underglow was just getting big. I thought it was cool, but never did it on my cars. Then when Fast and Furious came out, it renewed my attention. I still think it’s cool, but don’t think I would ever add it to any of my cars.
As for the smoked side markers, you’d probably have to rebuild the circuit board to lower the brightness. I believe they have a dedicated driver board that can take a large swing of voltage input. However, you could just run them unplugged….
I know this is an old post.
But avoid the HELIX brand. The contact pins with the connectors are weak.
They get pushed into the housing trying to connect the female end of the connector.
I bought them a year ago, finally decided to install, now its too late to return.
The IJDMToy have a separate wired connector, and those pins are stronger.
I can confirm that Helix connectors are kinda loose and weak.
I bought Helix for a few reasons: Helix used to make great OEM replacement lights, Helix is the only one had OEM looking connectors (connector directly on the light unit instead of using extra wires for harness) and price was great.
But when I push in to install, one of 2 things happen:
1. tuck in too easily and have to worry about disconnecting (so far it's holding it ok).
2. doesn't go in due to skinny pin not aligning correctly and bent so had to use pick tool to re-align (pain and annoying)
