That size is considerably larger overall than the factory 205/45-17 tire size. I mean, the 225/50-17 tire is almost 2” bigger in diameter alone, which is almost guaranteed to rub the fender, suspension, or both (particularly when the suspension is compressed at all).
225/45-17 on factory rims is pushing it. The rims are only 7" wide so they are on the narrow side. Also, you will most likely have clearance issues on the front struts ... some 215's do not clear. You can always use spacers, but spending on size they can affect steering feel.
I think the 215/45-17 is a better choice for three reasons - they are not too wide for the rims, they probably will not rub, and they are lighter than 225s by up to two pounds.
Some of the autocrossers on this forum are using 225s, but they are also using wider wheels with appropriate offset to avoid rubbing.
I've 225 45 17 Good Year Eagle F1 Assymetric in my Cosmos Spoke 499 Jet Black 7" wide stock rims witthout any problem. 225 is the maximum recommended width for 7" wide tires.
