Yes, There's some sort of mystique about the Jag brand -- a mystique that, IMHO, the latest iterations of Jaguar might be letting slip away. But then, as we take more trips around the sun, the good old days are remembered with increasing fondness, even if they weren't as good as we remember them.
Anyway, I ordered another MINI this month because I'm hooked, for as long as it lasts.
This is a recent photo of my wife's little 1984 darling -- her baby since the 1980's, when her loving husband bought it for her as a Christmas present:
Don't know about a 1999 911 but my 2002 Boxster, my 2008 Cayman S, my 2003 996 Turbo were (all are gone now) great cars and solidly built.
My 2018 Mini JCW is a fine car but it doesn't quite have the solid feel/sound when I close its door compared to any of my Porsches.
The JCW has no where near the road handling of any of my Porsche cars. With 228hp and 2800lbs it matches up well against the Boxster with 217hp and around 2880lbs in a straight line but still is hampered by its front wheel drive and those lousy run flats. In the twisties its no contest.
With my JCW I was cornering a bit like I use to in my Boxster but had to stop when at around 16K miles the brake wear warning light came on and the rear pads had to be replaced. Seems the stability control was being triggered and applying mostly the driver side rear brake.
Don't get me wrong I really enjoy my JCW and drive it more often than my 2018 Hellcat but the JCW does not compare well in many respects to my Porsche cars. Admittedly the Porsche cars cost anywhere from $10K to $17K to $24K more than the JCW. (While the Boxster and Cayman were both bought new, and both were bought at a considerable discount from sticker, the Turbo was bought used, with me paying less than half its $119K new price for a 6 year old low miles (<10K) pristine car with a 2 year 100K mile warranty.)

Beautiful Jag. Nice to see it without the leaper on the hood. Very clean.
I bought my first Cooper S as my sensible winter car when I had a 911 (997.2). I always felt the MINI was more fun...it wasn't better, but I always felt a bit too sensible in the 911. That wasn't true of the F-Type I got when I traded in the Porsche. That was a V8 with 500hp and rear-wheel drive. The loudest car I have ever driven - laugh out loud fun. Wish I still had both, but certainly enjoy having a small car payment and costs now.
Yes, great thread indeed! Not to bash Porsche, but my friend had a Porsche 912 when we were working for General Motors and attending engineering school in the late 60's...I think it was a '66. It definitely reminded me of a Volkswagon!…..it wasn't even very fast (especially since my car back then was a 1967 Chevelle SS396 L78 (putting out about 450HP+). Nowadays, a Porsche 912 is bringing in the $40,000 to $50,000 range for a pristine example...absolutely crazy imo! Now the Chevelle?...it's easily worth $100,000+ (and I should have never sold that one!) :-)
Wasn't a base 912 back then a VW 4 banger?
Yeah, why did I sell my 69 426 Hemi Road Runner!! My 70 428 CJ Mach 1, if I could have seen the future!!
oh my god I love your story, selling your 911 for a Cooper s,,,amazing, more expensive is not always better.
well my story is.....quickly.....bought my wife a 2012 roadster convertible, flew 4 hours to go get it and drive back.....the moment the owner picked me up and I drove it , I was like WTF is this thing, I fell in love immediately with it.....now lets remember that I also own a 2020 x3m completion which in its own right is much faster then your Porsche that you had and is a beast of performance and luxury and I love it, but I drive my Cooper coupe more, had to have a Cooper s for myself so bought an amazing 2012 Cooper coupe s, so much fun to drive it's insane and fast enough for hp and weight, my x3m is another level of fast, but not more fun and the x3m handles extremely well, just for size and practicality I would keep my x3m, but I'm able to afford both cars with no payments etc....it's just a luxury on both counts......but man did not expect to love my wife car, then had to have one of my own, so 1 convertible is enough and I love the quirky cool look of my coupe in red with pinstripes that I added afterwards,......amazing cars, speed is not everything and I got my car up to 230kmhs and my x3m up to 275kmh, and I drove a 911 turbo s up to 310kmh, but at 350k IT IS NOT WORTH IT AT ALL compared to my coupe at 11k.....11k with only 70000km, it was a steal........35 times less the price of the 911 turbo.......kudos to you.....in a perfect world maybe you would have your Porsche and the mini, but I have my x3m and the mini and I pick the mini 8 out of 10 times from my garage......so..,.,.,,enjoy......and go MINI

7/2020 I bought a 2015 F-56 that was built by a Mini Enthusiast. It was built @ factory 7/14 to sit on Miami's Mini Cooper showroom floor & sell MCS. It was leased & taken care of for first 3 years, Turned in & sold to a crazy man for 2 years that threw a minimum of $20K at it. It was optioned, lowered, Perf.-parted, & Hot-Tuned by Renn Haus of Sarasota (look at their website) Everything that was done was Top Dollar-The Best.3" SS Magnaflow exhaust for example Dyno'd @ 300 flhp 247 @ whl. & 350 ft./lb.s of Torque. I paid $16,6 for a $50+K car with 40K miles on odometer. 25K under lease. The AUDI dealership where I purchased it had no idea what they had. I turned on the Sirius & now burn to B.B. King's Bluesville Radio. .
Time to update my original post from a few years ago. The 2016 Cooper S is gone, replaced by a 2022 JCW that I factory ordered new in Sept 2021. Still have the 2003 Porsche C4S and love driving these amazing vehicles even though they have such distinctive personalities. And my wife's 2024 BMW X3 30i M Sport is a pretty sweet grocery getter!
