Good/bad results with the Bovee WMA3000B Bluetooth Adapter

First off, WTF was BMW thinking about not including bluetooth music streaming with their entertainment systems? You get that with a new Kia, fer chrissakes.

Anyway.... did my research, and it looked like the best bet was the Bovee adapter. Plugs into the USB plug and the Aux in plug, then you should get the same connectivity as you do when you plug your phone in directly.
(Side note: when I plug my Galaxy S8 Active into the USB connection, it keeps trying to connect but never does; just asks me if I want to over and over again.)
So mine arrives, I plug it in, and can't seem to get it to paired. My phone sees it when it first gets plugged in, but won't pair, and it won't show up on a rescan. Unplug it, try to pair, same thing.
One a hunch, I plug the USB connector into my charging adapter, and boom! It stays on and allows me to connect. I can play from my phone to the stereo, but of course none of the steering wheel controls work. So it seems like the MINI USB port is seriously underpowered, has anyone else noticed this?
My solution I'll be trying out when it gets here, is this.

One of the male connectors is for power only; I'll plug that into one of the ports on my charger. The other connector is for data, I'll plug that into the USB port and hopefully I'll have some steering wheel controls working. I'll update this when it gets here.
