Sport Mode Whine

Hi,

I have a 2017 F56 Justa that just had it's first regular maintenance at 12k kms. I've taken it fairly easy so far and have rarely used Sport mode.

But since I've long passed any kind of break-in period and have fresh oil, I decided to open things up a bit. So today I went for a drive through the hills and turned on Sport mode before starting up.

I had the windows down and the first thing I noticed was a faint whine coming from the rear when accelerating. I closed the windows and didn't hear it. I even parked by the side of the road and gunned the engine a few times but didn't hear it. But it is definitely there - only in Sport mode.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. TIA.

Turbo? Do you notice it more when there's walls or obstructions on one or both sides of the car?

Yes, most definitely. Does that mean there's a problem with the turbo? I understand that the turbo is always working, so why would it make a noise only in Sport mode? Plus, it doesn't make the noise when I use the S mode activated by the gear shift, which I think is the same as the Sport mode but without the tighter steering.

Thanks for your input.

From your description it sounds like something to do with the tightening of the steering which happens electronically when in Sport mode via the button push. From what I understand it is an electromagnetic valve that makes it work. Maybe the valve is throwing off the noise you hear. Maybe it's on my car and I just don't hear it.

Sorry but the noise is definitely coming from outside the car - nothing to do with the steering wheel. Plus it's only happening for a very shot time when accelerating from a dead stop or very slow roll. When I'm at speed and give it gas, I don't think I hear it.

Steering components are not in cabin, so any sounds could be reflected from underneath the car.
