FWIW my wife's R60 ALL4 does great on Sottozero IIs. She's on her third winter with them. Not sure if it's the extra weight, all wheel drive, or both (my money is on both) but they don't seem like a huge compromise on that car. It's not as savvy as my Golf R was on Altimax Arctic tires, but definitely safe and confident.

I would hope the Pirelli Sottozero 3's are better. My spouse's Countryman S uses the Sottozero 2's and I find them to be shockingly mediocre snow tires for the price.
I tried Sottozeros on my R55 (same time as I ordered the tires for her car). Absolutely hated them. They were awful in wet, dry, ice or snow. Definitely felt like a waste of money.
I sold them with only a few thousand miles on them to another MINI owner (with full disclosure of my opinion of them). He loves them! It's funny how personal tire choice can be.
I went back to Bridgestone LM-32's. Bridgestone remains my trusted go-to for winter tires. Amazing dry grip, very good wet grip, good in snow and ice. Worth every penny.
I did want to try Nokian but they have a very restricted distribution network (I live in Massachusetts). My local tire guys couldn't even buy them from another store that carries them! The store literally was not allowed to sell to anyone but an end customer. It wasn't worth an extra 30mi drive to me to spend more money on the tires
Anyway: Bridgestone Blizzak are my go-to winter tires. WS series for sedate drivers and LM for "spirited" drivers. Have used them on many small, lightweight cars and always performed well.
