Dealer should be able to get enough info off the fob to locate the owner.

Could be a serious matter requiring police investigation. Car theft, kidnapping, or worse. I would give the locals a call.

3rd Gen cars can be started and driven off from driveway while keys are still sitting in a basket at foyer front door....Probably just left on the roof of the car by owner before driving off.

Thanks all.

I'll send them to a dealer who can look up the owner in their system.

Case closed.

Keys arrived and owner located / contacted. No longer in Cape Cod area and no mystery to their being found. Fell off car after being started/driven off. Seems to be somewhat common with the F model now.

Thank you for all your efforts and time Jeff!! CU next visit.

I wonder what happened when he stopped the car and tried to re-start it

Not really, My car doesn't turn on if the keys are not inside the cabin.

It shouldn't start if the key isn't inside. You can leave it running and take the key outside. Weird.

Has spectacular range, probably more than it should....friend had his MINI parked in close proximity to front door of their home where key was on foyer table. He dove to work fine, but no-go for trip home....

My RDX does the same thing. while initially i thought it was weird, would suck if you drove off with the the keys and the battery dies (essentially same thing as taking keys out of the car) and the car shuts off in the middle of the road or at a stop sign/light.

As soon as i get out of my Countryman with key in pocket the dash will light up with a key symbol. Still can drive away, but hard to miss.
