I'm a new and first time owner of 2015 Cooper 4dr S auto. Check engine light came on yesterday, constant. Only 635 miles. Check fuel cap and it clicked one time so its tight. I went to set info, then check Info.......,"Check OK" lit up. How do I run the OBC to get the code? I don't feel comfortable driving the car to the nearest dealer which is 150miles away. Will probably call the roadside assistance. This is frustrating for a brand new car.
You're saying the CEL came on, you got out, verified the fuel cap, got back in, and the CEL went off? ...and there's still no CEL? ...and the car is driving fine?
Do you have an OBDII scan-tool? There might still be a freeze frame or a pending code. Posted OBDII codes often need 5+ error-free engine on/off cycles before clearing themselves. What you observed doesn't sound like a posted code, but something random and transient.
Before getting all uncomfortable and frustrated, at least call your dealer service department and explain the exact situation. They're there to help. Don't call Roadside for a perfectly drivable car.
The cel is still on/lit after checking the gas cap. It's still on. No I don't have an OBDII scan tool. My situation is a little bit not so convenient to call my dealer service department because I bought the car from a different state (west cost) and I'm live in the South. But yes I did call the dealer but I haven't heard from them yet.
Ok, CEL still on. Where are you located? Chances are someone here can meet up with you and read the OBDII for you. ...or go to an Auto Zone and borrow one for free.
The service department will fix your car under warranty regardless where you bought it. They get paid no matter what. Keep calling them.

Mississippi. Yes I will keep calling them. I'm hesitant driving the car to the nearest dealer 150miles away, because I don't want to give them any reasons blaming me for having caused further damage to the car since the check engine light in on. Thank you
I understand your hesitation, but that's not how OBDII CEL works. A solid light means there's a non-critical, usually emissions related tolerance or fault, and the engine is generally fine to drive. A flashing light means a function-critical fault has occurred, which you would know about, since the engine would die and either go into limp-home or leave you stranded. The latter is definitely not common.
Head to an auto parts store that'll loan you a code reader, and then talk with your dealer over the phone. Post the code here and we'll try to help.
Sorry about your frustrations. Any other symptoms you notice besides the CEL? Ryephile is right that a scan tool will be your best idea as it will be able to pull the code triggering the CEL. If you do pull the code you should be able to get an idea of how serious it is. Let us know what you find.
Just an update. I talked to the service advisor of the nearest Mini dealer and was advised to send the car to them thru roadside assistance. They will pick the car today. Anybody used the roadside assistance before? Are they pretty good handling the car? Thanks

When I used it, mini subbed the towing (flatbed) out to a local company, who did a great job, course I was watching during the loading and unloading process.

Yes, mini sub the towing with the local towing company, I will be present during the loading but will not be there at the dealer when unloading the car. I will just communicate with the service advisor thru phone. Any advice so it will be a smooth repair?
Guys, thank you for all your advices, but to make the story short, the towing company that BMW contacted to tow my car to the dealer back out coz it's too far (150miles), waited for an hour and did not show up at all or call that they are not coming at all. I'm not glad that they didn't make it because when I park my car back to the carport the check engine light is gone. Now I so excited again driving the car, no worries. Again thank you.
You should get an OBDII tool, keeps your peace of mind. I've got a bluetooth one that works with my iPod.
I've had the light come on a couple of times as the car starts up for a crankshaft position sensor. It clears after you start the car a couple of times. I've told the dealer and they did not seem concerned.
I had some more dramatic issue last week that involved a tow and a fix, you could tell by the codes that it was real trouble, oxygen sensor, misfire on multiple cylinders. That and the car was heaving like it was bucking horse.
Interestingly, they show up as Land Rover specific codes, according to the app.

Go to Autozone, NAPA or some other local parts store or garage and see if they can scan the code for you. Its pretty easy and a heck of a lot easier then dealing with tow trucks, loaner cars etc..
It takes 2 seconds for them do scan it. It will save you a lot of stress
