F55/F56 Crankshaft Guide Bearing Shell Collar TSB
Just guessing, but unless there are a number of other parts or systems designed to work w/ the B48, I see no reason why they wouldn't replace with the newer motor.
That being said, when my dish DVR shot craps, rather than replace it with a newest model, I got a working refurbished old model. So it likely depends on if they have an a large inventory of B48's crate motors to pull from.

Good luck DunkM!
Just got a call that my car is ready after 25 days in the shop! ( new engine).I am fearful because my new car has been taken apart. I saw it dismantled- parts all over the place. They have to remove the whole front end to gain access. Will it be the same car with no prior problems? I'll keep the site posted. Not too happy with my Mini dealer also and the way they handled things.

Done correctly. It will be better than before. Removing the front end is part of the design for these cars and is stupid simple (half hour shop time) But it does make me fearful that you said you don't like how the MINI dealer is handling it. My dealer has been great and they even got me their roadster S as a loaner car. I trust them to take the time to do it right. Don't know if I trust yours to do the same.
My car had the recall done a couple weeks ago. I now have 1000 miles on the new engine, and all is fine. the car is just as good as new. New engine was put in with 8000 miles on the car. I have also added the JCW Pro Exhaust since.
I have nothing but good things to say about my dealer, Mini of Bedford in Bedford New Hampshire.
I took my car in on a Monday, and it was ready for me that Friday morning.

From talking to my service manager, I gathered that the majority of the cars are repaired without a complete engine replacement. All depends on the amount of damage and direction from Mini USA.

Well, I took my MCS in for the recall this morning. Got a call from my SA and was told that I'm getting a new engine. When they dropped the oil pan they found metal shavings. And a scored crankshaft journal. It will be at least two weeks before the engine shows up from Germany, and then the time necessary to install the new engine. If all goes well at the dealer (and mine is a good one), I will have a mint MCS (inside and outside) coupled with a brand new motor. I'm sad this happened, but I do have confidence in my dealer and Mini. So I am very optimistic that I'll be very happy with the car when it comes back home in 3 weeks or so.
Did the crankshaft TSB with no new engine on my 2014 F56S. No shavings were found. The car has about 34000 km on it.They also did a fix to the cone tower and shift linkage as I had been experiencing the first gear popping out on it's own. A bunch of other fixes and software updates were done at the same time. Car drives very well, a noticeable improvement. It took 2 days and MINI Vaughan West provided a Countryman S as a loaner. I felt like the whole thing was handled very well and professionally. I have no misgivings about the car or the dealership.
Similar experience as previous. I got the bearings done and it seems like they did an ecu update as I don't feel like 2nd gears only reason to exist is to destroy tires, but I will see as I just got the car back last night. I got a roadster S for my loaner and I really enjoyed it for the first week of spring weather. I will be giving them great reviews.
Getting my Mini back today after one month for a new engine plus another warranty problem. Mini USA declined to replace the turbocharger due to metal in the oil. I had noted other owners had been given a new turbocharger for this reason.Hope all is good. Will report.
Got my Mini back two days ago. So far all is good. Great to have power again after the base countryman automatic loaner. The service manager told me the cause of the problem was a design error on the thrust bearing. Apparently they decided to only put the thrust portion of the bearing on the lower half (a costly error). Hope all continues to go well. Love the car again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Took my wife's 2015 F56S in for its oil change last Friday. While it was there, they mentioned the campaign to check the crank bearings for wear. Sure enough, the car needs new bearings, but there are no kits available in the US. Wait time is at least 3 weeks. ugh.
There were 3 other cars in their shop for the exact same issue? 2 were getting new engines. Seriously, WTF.
We then discovered the loaner countryman they gave us had a fuel leak (5000 miles on it...) so returned that 2 days later for an F56 Non-S that has been decent.
I don't expect even new cars to be completely problem free, but MINI is not impressing me with their current level of failures. At least the service dept at Classic MINI is still good at taking care of people. They do look a little beaten down though.

That is a long time. Mine was at the dealer for 11 days, but it was ready in 10. That was from initial drop off, dropping the pan for inspection/pictures, approval from Mini for the swap, ordering the motor and installation. Has your dealer said why it's taking so long? Maybe they had to order more engines from Germany, although with the relatively short time they had my car they must have found one closer by. I feel for you VYPUR and hope y'all get it sorted out soon.

My car has been in the shop about 4 months maybe more total in less than 2 years. If I wasn't so much negative equity in it I'd trade the damn thing. I love the car but damn $33k for a car that stays in the shop stupid.
