runflats, tire repair kit?

Im trying to find information on what kind of tires and tire repair kits come on a 2015 MCS. If you get runflats do you get a repair kit (tire goop?). I see some cars come with a spare tire on the undercarriage, how do you designate what kind of kit you're going to get with a new car?

Thanks

after reading a bit, it seems only non-S coopers with 15" tires get a spare tire

Im assuming everything else comes with runflats, what kind of roadside repair kit is there for those cars?

The ideas behind runflats is that you can drive on it without air for 50 or so miles. No repair kit, and it's my understanding that most tire shops will not attempt to fix the flat, just replace it.

For what it's worth, I read that tire repair goop, like FixAFlat and Slime will wreck your TPMS sensor, and they are $30-$130 to replace. I've got a 2014 MCS with no spare and frankly, it seems like a pretty stupid concept. Unless you are in the tire business.

I have a spare with my 2014 MC that has 16" run-flats.

I haven't changed a flat or checked out the spare yet.

Here's what Bridgestone says:
Q: Is it possible to repair a Run-Flat Technology tire that has been punctured?
A: It depends on how far and at what speed the car was driven after the puncture was sustained. Repair is possible only if deemed so by the tire sales store.
Preconditions include a puncture of less than 6mm for both side-reinforced type and support-ring type Run-Flat Technology tires, plus minimal damage to the support ring in case of the latter.
However, it is strongly recommended that the tire is replaced as its durability will have been weakened after being repaired.

So, I guess it'll be most economical to stop driving as soon as possible, try pumping air into tire (carry a foot pump for temporary air), or get it towed, or replace with a spare if you have one. That'll increase your chances to be able to repair the tire.

I think that's likely, and they are maybe $50 each.

I had nail holes fixed on my runflats twice at Discount Tire. To not have runflats you pretty much have to order the JustaCooper car with the basic wheels. Otherwise you get runflats, no spare, no jack, nothing.

If you get sidewall damage on a tire neither run flats nor mobility kits is going to get you going again.

The MCS comes with a mobility kit in England but runflats are an extra-cost option there.

I've been doing this for 52 years and I have changed a tire at the side of the road once. In all other cases I kept adding air until the screw or nail was removed and the tire was patched. Most "flats" were discovered in the morning when I came out of the house.

A mobility kit is not a bad thing for adding air no matter what tires you have as the runflats are damaged internally by heat only when running with no air in them.

Fix-A-Flat ruins TPMS sensors. Slime is clean-off-able.

I had a 2009 Clubman S with run flats. They were noisy and lasted about 25K miles. Horrible. I replaced with non-run flat Michelins. Quiet long lasting... great.

Just bought a 2015 MCS. Didn't want runflats. Could not find one or order and MCS without runflats in NorCal. Only non-S has them. You can get either performance or all-season runflats with the MCS as an option. Usually come with all-season.

MCS has no spare, no repair kit, no jack.

Will see how these runflats hold up.

Interesting as fix-a-flat literature in the UK says its TPMS safe and washes off the tyre carcass.

I've just bought two cans, a 12oz one for the GFs justa (to use with its winter non run flat tyres), and a larger 16oz can to use with my 16" non run flats on the Countryman. Thankfully both cars use the FTM system, not the TPMS valve sensors

I have a 2015 Justa, 16" runflats, WITH a spare. MCS do NOT a get a spare due to the exhaust routing under the car. As soon as the run flats wear out, I'm dumping them..

Gen II hardtop turbos didn't have jacks either. Some S models do, some don't.

ALL MINI Cooper R56/F56 models (non S), come with a temporary spare mounted under the rear bumper. If a Cooper is built or equipped with run-flat tires, it still comes with a spare tire.

All 4-seat convertibles and Paceman/Countryman (both Cooper and Cooper S models) are equipped with run-flats standard and NO SPARE TIRE.

Since run-flat tires are designed to be driven flat or get you safely to the side of the road or off the freeway, the sidewall can be compromised/damaged while driving in that condition (basically doing its job keeping the rim off the pavement and you in control) - even if only a few miles. Therefore, it is not recommended to patch/repair those tires. The next time you get a puncture, the run-flat technology will be compromised and may fail entirely. I had a buddy with an MC40 that got a flat, had it patched, and then picked up a nail on a drive with me following behind. The tire went flat, then collapsed and proceeded to shred at about 35 mph and in the span of maybe 3-5 miles. He ended up ruining the rim as well.

You can safely repair a runflat if you DO NOT run on it with low/zero air pressure. This why an air compressor can be useful even if you have runflats.

Correct. I have repaired a few flats (4 I think on) on RFTs. Just don't drive it low and you are good to go.

Tire Repair

Last 7 years I've had an S R56 and then a Countryman All4. Ditched the runflats as soon as they wore out. I bought a small compressor for the 12-volt system and a repair kit at AutoZone with rubber cement and worms. I had many flats with the R56 (construction sites) and fixed them on the spot. Had a few low pressure warnings on the road and pulled off and pumped up or fixed the nail hole. Only takes about 5 minutes but you need gloves or your hands are dirty. Use your head on what you fix and when you replace the tire, as well as how fast you drive if on the way to the tire store.

Just ordered a 4 door justa and looking forward to a spare, but Ill patch the hole if possible as it takes way less time.

Soon after I got the R56 the runflat lost all its air without tripping the sensor. I drove probably 80 miles at speed. Once I got back to the car after fishing I saw the tire looked low. Pressure gage registered zero. I drove slow to the gas station and pumped it up. Five minutes later it was flat again. Late at night and it dawned on me that the bump I felt 90 miles ago caused the flat. By this time the sensor was active. I drove the rest of the way home as slow as I felt I could on the interstate and went to Discount Tire the next day. Needless to say the tire was not repairable. That incident prompted me to get the compressor and repair kit.
