Plastidip

Anyone ever used plastidip on a car? I have an appt for Monday to get all the chrome bits on my S plastidipped in black. I originally planned to do it in Vinyl, but my shop did not seem terribly confident in being able to do the gas cap and door handles well and pushed me towards plastidip. I was also considering doing the roof to give it a satin/matte look but I have read that results on large surfaces are rather disappointing and that vinyl is the better route for larger surfaces?

Love to get thoughts around this!

I've never done it but when I had my FR-S it was common practice among many on our forum. Wheels, mirrors, roofs; any and all done by many FR-S owners and I never heard a negative comment. In fact, most of them did it themselves. Theory was, if you botch the job, let it dry, peel it off and do it again till you get it right.

Whaap is on the money with his comment. It was / is all the rage with the Honda CR-Z crowd when I had that car. Never did it myself but even people who knew what a buffoon I was with tools said I couldn't get plasti dip wrong. Good luck!

Any thoughts on how it compares to Vinyl? Would you wrap a roof or plastidip it?

If sprayed right, it can downright look like paint. People "dip" whole cars. Check out some of the vids https://www.youtube.com/user/DipYourCarcom

Does plastidip hold up well (chrome headlight trim, for example)) to road rash? I would love to do a black plastidip on all of my chrome trim, including the gas cap. Just concerned about long term durability.

How much did the shop quote you to plastidip all of your chrome trim?

Just look on YouTube there are a lot of videos on it. Why pay someone to do it? I did my grill messed up took it off and did it again and I like the look. It will hold up fine but it has a rubber feel since it is plastic.
Look for videos from dipyourcar.com

Matte Black is easy to find. The HomeDepot sales it at a good price just make sure to do about 4 layers.

Plastidip is honestly an incredible product. You may as well try to do it yourself, and if you can't get the right results, then pay someone. THe beauty is really if you screw it up, just peel it off (or put goo gone on it).

If you're doing your wheels, I would do more than just the regular matte black. Dipyourcar has several really cool colors - I did a true metallic with glossifier plastidip on my forester's wheels, and matte black on the grill.

I've had the chrome grille on my Saab 9-2X plastidipped 5 years ago, did three light coats and it still looks as good as new. Not a single rock chip on the surface (I wish I could say the same for my hood or bumper) and no peeling in any area. It has survived many Chicago winters and up close power washing at the self-wash places to get the bugs off too.

OMG! That looks absolutely awesome! IMO, MINI should have offered black headlight (and rear, too) surrounds as an option. I HATE the chrome since my MCS has a black/BRG color scheme. Even my wheels are black. I will definitely go with black surrounds. Either when black surrounds are offered (IF they are) or going the plastidip route.

Did you go with a matte black for the surrounds?

That's good to know that it doesn't chip easily. I guess the key is going with a minimum of 3 coats. Thanks for the info.

Thanks and yes matte black. Taking them off is a matter of pushing a few clips and pulling up a tiny bit of foam tape, so doing them takes under an hour with no masking or peeling needed. I drove across the state and back racking up Highway miles and a TON of bugs, none of which effected the dip in any way.

I will be doing the rear surrounds and the grill surround one of these days. I will be sure to post pics of that too.

I had a white roof I wanted to black out. I have my own dip sprayer, so I was able to use the gallons and get a good finish on mine. The look is great, not as smooth as vinyl. I used a glossifier to finish of the look. Its not super glossy, more of a satin look.

One thing I noticed about dipping my roof, the windnoise increased quite a bit. I have a sunroof so the little lip between the sunroof and the rest of the roof makes the noise since the thickness increased with the dip and glossifier. I personally feel the glossifier was the main contributer to the noise level.

That being said, I'm very happy with the results. I dipped the roof September last year, no peeling as of yet. I did 5 coats. You'll want more coats with area that are hit with a lot of wind turbulence.

Here is my chrome deleted Cooper S. I love how most of it turned out. Not so sure how much I like how the gas cover and the logos blacked out look. I may have those bits changed. Going to do a carbon fiber wrap on a couple of items soon as well. Over all I love the look!!!

I was quoted 250 to paint them. A can of plastidip is 6 bucks, and if things wear...(like on your door handle), you can touch it up in about ten minutes. I have done that a couple of times.

It is holding up well on the gas cap, skuttle, rings, badge on the back etc.. The door handle gets touched daily so it will need to be redone next week.
