Crunch!!

Got hit hard from the side yesterday in my one month old F56. I was approaching an intersection and a careless driver decided they would rather be in my lane in my space. The side impact was hard and my wheel took the brunt. Their tire and hubcap ground into my wheel and their fender crunched my fender. The impact folded the mirror in and knocked my head about. The hood is crunched up a bit. No one hurt. Now I have to find a shop in the area that will fix it right to MINI specs, settle with insurance, yada yada. The only positive is that the other driver and I have the same great insurance company.

Oh boy, from what I can tell you're number 3 so far. See the thread named "rear bumper works". My car has $3300 damage and is being worked on as we speak. I feel your pain. Hopefully you're ok.

I'll get a new painted hood and some fender parts. My concern is the wheel mount/brakes/lug studs, drive train, and steering and the frame from the impact. I can deal with cosmetic stuff like paint and such as long as the car is solid. You should have seen the other car, metal fender crushed and folded, hub cab shredded, plastic front fender broken.

Thanks for the encouragement y'all and for those that have been hit, hope you get yours back in 100% shape soon.

Unfortunately, I'll have an "incident" on carfax now.

Oh no! I had something similar happen to my last car. I hope that they can get you fixed up ASAP. Maybe you can get a fun loaner car?

This is what happens when defensive driving just isn't a match for carelessness.

Make sure the shop measures everything (frame, mechanical) on a laser jig and shows you those measurements! You don't need to wonder or worry down the road because of alignment issues or bearing wear.

Chanp. Any stone chips on the hood? If there are any scratches or marks hey will be gone as you are getting a new hood! Make sure they give you a new wheel too. How noisy was the sound when it happens. My MA had the whole front end drive over by a large truck and he said it was noisy inside the car. I was surprised considering the amount of sound proofing.
Happy you are not hurt.

So sorry to hear about your incident. Be very vigilant about any neck, shoulder pain - you matter most! Cars can be repaired - our bodies nowhere near as resilent.

Police report got to the Ins.Co., fault assigned, process in play to get car fixed. When you're the victim and the other person has good insurance, it really makes the situation better. Body shop sent a flatbed to the house this week and I'll get a free rental. I won't see the F56 again until it is fixed. The body shop (BMW certified) says that the car will go to the MINI dealer to verify quality of repairs, alignment, damage, etc. before it comes back to me. Meaning my MINI service manager will be involved. All parts will be new, including the wheel. I hope the service parts like the hood are available in the US for a speedy repair and the paint matches. Unfortunately, I will be their first 2014 hardtop repair. No ETA.

I feel bad for everyone that has had accidents at the hands of someone else. I never wanted to buy a car that had been in an accident of any kind.

That is so frustrating. I just curbed (a small amout) one of my new 18" wheels the other day, and I know how that felt...!!

Hope it gets repaired to your satisfaction, and returned to you soon. Good luck.

Darn, what a shame. At least nobody was hurt. I'm sure your dealer will ensure the repairs are done properly and hopefully you'll be very pleased.

Update: I've been driving a KIA Soul for the past two weeks. It is a nice car for the price point, but it has no power. I miss the F56 2.0 engine! I should have my F56 back next week according to the body shop. They are taking the car to MINI of Nashville for alignment checks, drive train inspection, body part fit, etc. I called my SA and asked him to personally look at the car to be sure everything was first class. Pics of the "after" will be posted.

Update:

My MINI dealer is reporting that MINI hasn't released the wheel alignment specs to the dealers for the new F56. That has been the hold up. They are expecting some type of update tomorrow from MINI tech support. My car needs to go on the alignment machine to be checked before I can get it. Hopefully, everything will spec out ok and the paint job is good.

Your accident reminds me what happened to my first new car then 34 years ago, a 1980 Celica.
I had a very similar problem on that car when it was only a few months old. The impact of the accident pushed the whole rear axle to one side about 1/2". Initially no one noticed the offset and I found it later. One side had more/less space between the wheel and the inside wheel well than the other side.
Make sure you check yours carefully!

So happy you're okay, that's the most important bit, as the other posters have also commented. So sad about your MINI, hopefully you'll be behind his / her wheel soon. Please do keep us posted.

Update:

My car is at my MINI dealership waiting for the alignment. I took a peek this morning on the way into work. Hood looks great, needs the fender trim and new wheel. I imagine the MINI folks will do the wheel mount and balance as well.

Finally!!

I got my car back today. The hood looks better than the day it was delivered. (Pics coming when I get home) On another thread, I reported the original hood was covered in holographic swirls at delivery. This new hood is like a mirror. The midnight black paint matches perfectly. Matching the metallic paint on a dark car is challenging but they nailed it. This paint job is so good, it makes the rest of the car's finish look bad!! I have been driving a KIA Soul for 38 days and I had forgotten how awesome this F56 is!!

I took the car to a very large, highly recommended BMW certified body shop in Nashville. They did an awesome job. I'm OCD and I could find nothing amiss. You cannot tell the car was ever involved in a fender bender. Total on repairs for this "minor" fender bender - with all new MINI OEM parts and MINI paint (hold onto your drawers):

$604.80 Shop Labor for repairs
$30.07 Emblem (MINI OEM)
$24.50 Headlight Bezel (MINI OEM)
$577.97 Hood (MINI OEM)
$26.96 side marker light (MINI OEM)
$66.91 Wheel well liner (MINI OEM)
$91.12 Fender flare (MINI OEM)
$199.94 Alignment and inspection at local MINI dealer
$168.75 Wheel (MINI OEM)
$131.25 Flatbed Tow
$75.00 Flatbed Tow
$15.00 Car cover
$508.20 Paint Labor
$363.00 Paint supplies (MINI paint)
$2,883.47 Total Parts Labor invoice

$1,139.62 Rental Compact Car 38 days (Enterprise)

$4,023.09 Total

Wow, I can only imagine the repair bill if the car was damaged much worse. This cost me nothing as the other driver's insurance company covered everything with no issues.

Still waiting for my car; quarter panel is backordered. This is taking longer than the original build and I've missed driving the car most of my Summer.

An uninsured driver failed to stop at the intersection (their light was red) and hit my wife on the driver's side front. My wife hit her brakes and stopped, the other driver never tried to avoid the accident, nor hit her brakes until after the impact. Had my wife not stopped, she probably would have been t-boned in the driver's door and injured.

Accident happened on 2 Oct and we are still waiting for parts....mainly the hood. Bummer.

You better make sure you get at least a few thousand back for diminished value. Having an accident history greatly reduces value

Yeah that doesn't fly in most states. Ins law states to put vehicle back in pre accident condition. Not value. It's a grey area but in a regular case as this there is no diminished value to recoup

Well in nc I know it does, even in pre wreck condition,, the car is still worth considerably less with an accident history. Hit by someone in my old s2000 and got around 3k back for diminished value from the other drivers insurance company even after it was fixed properly. I had to fight for it though they only offered me like 1k at first
