I'm not by any means saying it'll be quick to find tunes on the newer engines, I'm referring to BMWs getting tuned by shops that work just primarily on these motors know what they're doing. It'll be probably a year+ if anything truly happens for the F56+ gens. Hopefully that clarifies my comment better.

It's not THAT much of a puzzle.
The new engine is based on N20/N26 BMW engine family, which is highly under-rated by BMW (all BMW turbo engines are!).

N20 already has significant aftermarket tuner support (Hartge, Burger, aFe, Google for more).
BMW itself sells PPK tuner kits (Performance Power Kits) for 328 (N20B20).
Hartge and Burger bump N20B20 output by 45 hp and 60 ft.lbs. - not bad for $380.

It's not based on the N20. It is replacing the N20 (eventually). Completely new engine.

Isn't this the same 4 cyl turbo in the 2012 BMW 328i and 2013 BMW 320i ?

To get an idea of the potential, check out the hp and torque for those cars!

So new buyers of the MINI get to do the R&D work before it goes in the BMW

looks like when my R56 dies... it's time to invest in a S15.....and build my own motor and such.... nothing new coming out of the Mini camp that I would replace my car with in the next 2-7 years makes me want to touch it with a 10' pole.

Didn't notice until today that the headlights are not flush with the hood any longer. They are now inset in the hood. They tried way too hard on the design of the front end. It's like incorporating everything from every other car maker out there into one redesign. Too complicated.....

Looks like the Euro pedestrian collision requirements got in the way of sloping the nose at the same angle as the headlights. Probably not cosmetically ideal, yet very familiar to all Porsche 911 owners - same requirement, same outcome.

Here are more specs:
http://s3.motoringfile.com.s3.amazon...1/US-Specs.pdf

New engine codes are B38A15M0 (1.5L 3-cylinder) and B48A20M0 (2.0L 4-cylinder).

Sadly, looks like the US F56 picked up ~80lbs in safety gear over R56 vs. weight loss for the Euro counterpart:

*sigh*

Looks like this thread all but puttered out. On my run this past weekend, one of the guys R56 was in the shop and they loaned him an F56. I think it was him who told me that this is the same engine in the 328i. While the power and interior is a big upgrade, here's some pics from my run to illustrate how that front end has gone from tucked to the front wheel to mega overhang...

My R56 and all the way at the end of the row is the gray F56

I know we've already beat this horse to death, but it's pretty striking.

Great way of showing the difference in length. Not only is the front end longer, it sits much higher too.

You can thank new European pedestrian safety regulation for that. Something about protecting the lower extremities of a pedestrian during collision.

Porsche folks went through the same angst as well, but it is what it is.

Surprisingly though, once you stop comparing it to previous generations the design really works. The front overhang was one of the first things I disliked about the F56, but I honestly don't even notice it anymore, and my wife has an R55 so I see them both every day.

The tail lights were my other knee jerk dislike and they're my favorite design feature now.

Problem is, I feel like I'm forcing myself to like it. It just isn't as nice a design overall and the tail lights are my biggest issue - they are just WAY too big for a car this size.
