2011 Mini Clubman Electronic Issues

Hey everyone, first time posting and joining. Have read a number of threads but just cannot seem to find the exact same issue I am experiencing although maybe I am searching incorrectly.

Backround - bought the Mini Cluman in 2014, man trans, second hand with 27k miles on it. It has run very well for us and we really like This Mini and Minis in general.

Issue - Seemed to start earlier this year with a loud pop coming from the speakers. It was always a one time pop and I thought it correlated to inserting the fob but then a couple times later it did it even when sitting in the car and no fob inserted. This occurred randomly and maybe once a week at most. Then in the last month I have experienced where all lights, dash and driving go off and back on and in both cases it was around 5am driving to Boston Logan on the I95. The engine did not sputter, quit or lose power in any way. This has occurred three times now so have done the following:

- checked battery, reads fine with engine off or on (was replaced in late 2018)
- checked alternator, seems fine
- checked fuses in engine bay and at passenger ride side panel, all good
- thinking a possible short, starting checking all circuits by disengaging negative off battery and using multimeter and then removing each fuse one at a time to check amps —-> found removing radio head fuse dropped amps and also the fuel pump did the same. The head unit was a suspicion of mine and the fuel pump fuse surprised me.

Based on the above, do I need to replace the head unit? I’m not concerned with the effort, more the price for the unit itself. Any other thoughts?

Tks
Kyle

You would be better served posting in the 2nd generation forum, this is for 3rd gen cars. First off check the condition of your battery. An old failing battery will cause strange electrical problems.

Sorry! Thought I was in the right one but of course not.

Mods, are you able to move this thread?

PS - on battery it reads 12.86 when engine is not running, 14.35 when running.
