Will higher performance coils throw a CEL?

Greetings! So my stealer is quoting me $660 to change out my spark plugs at my approx 50k service. I’m not convinced that that is really reasonable as I have seen the NKG plugs for around $100 for 4. ECS has a bundle that also has upgrades coils also. My question is, IF I were to go that route, what are my chances of getting a CEL? I was contemplating the upgraded coils since I was thinking of finally getting the Dinan sport module. From what I was reading, coils should last around 100k miles. 100+ degree Texas summers are coming and I was wanting to do some upgrades before I don’t feel like going out to work on it.
Thank you in advance.

Definitely change them yourself, it's one of the easiest maintenance tasks. You may not need to change out your coils at this point, but I would anyway since they're also pretty cheap. Remember to get some dielectric grease, some anti-seize lube, and a gap tool if you don't have one. I don't know the torque spec off hand, but you should definitely use a torque wrench when reinstalling.

I don't see why upgraded coils would throw any codes, but I'm no expert.

Last I checked they recommend changing spark plugs on JCW Minis at around 28k miles. That's what my Mini dealer did with my last JCW. I don't think I had to pay for it, it was part of regular service (oil, filter etc).

Well so far I’m up to $800…for lightbulb change, oil and filter change, micro filter change, rotation. I think that’s the last time I do this… I’m definitely doing the spark plugs myself. I’m assuming NKGs are a step up?

Hello Wagon4me,

I have installed the Ignition Projects coils with new iridium spark plugs from NGK on my MINI F54 Clubman and no CEL. The engine response is crisper, and it revs quicker!

The coils were not cheap but, in my opinion, well worth it!

Saludos,

Speedy
