F54 Code 102002 with cold air intake
Code 102002 with cold air intake
Had the Check Engine light come on. Took JediStarfighter to the dealership since it’s still under warranty. I was told initially that the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor had been fouled by oil from the K&N filter on my cold air intake (CAI). After providing documentation that K&N cannot foul MAFs, the dealer contacted MINIUSA to figure out the problem. The current idea is that the CAI lets in too much air in and the computer can’t deal with it. I know, I know...crazy.
The only code I can find is 102002 which seems to mean there is too little air coming in according to the MAF.
I think the dealer and/or MINIUSA does not want to warranty the MAF and is using the CAI as there excuse.
Anyone run into this problem with an aftermarket CAI?

Right off the bet, if an aftermarket part causes factory part to malfunction, they will not warranty the repair. I have been in for modifying cars with just bolt-ons, and I'm always worry about something goes wrong under the warranty period that the dealer will not warranty the repair either because or blame on the aftermarket parts....
I do have a Agency Power CAI that doesnt use oil on the filter, I have put only a few hundreds miles on the F54 so far. No issue at the moment.
I would suggest to put back the OEM intake box and see of the code returns. Although I have never heard of intake letting too much air in....

If you changed out he intake, and are now getting a code related to the MAF, as mentioned, best bet would be to swap the stock intake back and see if it comes back. If it does, then take it to the dealer.
102002 if for too little air, not too much. That would tell me the MAF is faulting out because the readings don't match what is expected based on the readings from other sensors. I would run the OEM air box for a couple weeks, then reinstall the aftermarket intake. If the problems come back after re-installation, then its time to find a new intake.
I have the AWE S-flo intake on my 2019 Cooper and it's been fine for 10's of thousands of miles at this point. Sorry to hear you're having issues with the K&N intake. I'd put the stock intake back on and see if the code stays away after clearing it. If it does, then you need to find a new intake or stick with the stock one. If it comes back with the stock intake, head back to the dealer.
