Optimistic speedometer

i suppose many of you have noticed that your speedometer is rather optimistic. My Clubbie has HUD which is a little more realistic than the analog dial speedometer but is still off by at least 5 percent. I got a GPS speedometer app for my iPhone to check the error and sure enough it is about 5%

so so I bought one of the slick little dash mounts from Go Badges for the iPhone and it works rather well. So when I'm on the highway i plug in he phone and dial up the GPS speedo app, put the phone in the holder and that becomes my new HUD.

I checked with my dealer to see if there is a programming fix for this and they said no. I have 17" rims and may go with a slightly larger diameter tire when it's time to change to see if that helps. No AWD on he car so that shouldn't be a issue.

Anyone else experiencing this?

You can change this setting with bimmercode or one of the other coding apps. I forget what it is called.

Unfortunately, the coding change does not function on US models. I suspect one or more silly regulations at fault.

Try the coding. It will not change the analog "dial" speedo, but it might change the digital readout.

The reason for the discrepancy is a European Union law that requires that speedometers can't read lower than the actual speed limit. There is a significant fine involved for the automobile companies, so they err on the slow side.

I put the next size bigger tires on my MINI, it brings the displayed speed to within one mile per hour of the GPS reading.
