Factory alarm vs. dealer vs. aftermarket.

Wonder if the 'factory alarm' can be ordered (miniusa says 3/07 availability) for pre-production R56 and if it's cheaper to get it factory installed rather than purchasing it from the dealership after delivery--due to labor charges. Also wonder if anyone reccommends an aftermarket unit in place of the OEM?

Everything is cheaper from the factory.
You do realize it's a very expensive noise maker and that is it.
07 MINIs have built in ignition/engine kill or something (call askmini and ask them about it)
There have been discussions in NAM on whether LowJack or an Alarm is better -- it's good reading -- might be in r53 section.

were you able to order the alarm?

Thanks for your response--just wondering if you ordered the alarm and if so, what the MSRP is?

nope. No alarm, I don't remember the price or even if it was available when i ordered my car. I do remember thinking that's a lot of money (like between 500 to 850) for just a noise making horn and a computer setting that flashes the lights.
I don't spend too much time in areas that are high theft areas so not much need -- hopefully!

Don't know about the '07, but in the <'07, they were all dealer installed (or self installed). MSRP was $395.

It's called the immobilizer. It costs $400 for the alarm to be factory installed.

What's the goal?

What is the intended purpose of the alarm?

If it is intended to be a deterent or lower insurance rates, my ins company gives the same discount to an alarm as they give to having the VIN etched into the glass. You can get the etching done for about $20 bucks. Seems professional theives will either take it no matter what it has - or loose interest for a car with the VIN in so many extra, unsellable places.

If you have real theft concerns I've friends who've gotten their stolen cars back in less that 24 hours with LOJACK .... it works in Miami anyway! On the down side I know a guy with a MINI and his unit fell out from under the dash and he's still battling with getting the 'hidden so no one can find it' re-hidden.....

No one seems to pay much attention to alarms.....not in big cities anyway.

your milage may vary
