Heated Seats

I've got an 04 Cooper that doesn't have the heated seats. Looks like there are wires going to the seat and wondered if anyone had converted their non-heated to heated?

Yes there is a OEM kit and some have done this already.
Do a search on Heated Seats and you'll likely find alot.

Those sound like the wires going to the airbags in the seat, as well as the seat belt buckle. Unless you're one of the lucky few with an unused connector under your seat (for the heater elements), a retrofit will be expensive. There is a kit for the wiring, but you'll still have to obtain seat cushions w/ the heater elements in them.

I plan on doing this to mine once my finances catch up from the holidays...

Moss Mini has a retrofit kit available for $129.00/seat. See their web site at www.mossmini.com under interior accessories.

I had after-market heated seats put in by Classic Soft Trim(www.classicsofttrim.com). It was $500, but since we've been dipping into the 40s regularly here in balmy San Francisco, I'm pretty happy with it.

I actually spec'ed the cold weather package and had my MINI delived without it. Because I had paid for this, I wanted it put in. Instead of trying to retrofit the seats, the dealer ordered another MINI with the cold weather stuff installed and then pulled the seats out and put them in mine. I asked him what they would do with the car and he told me they would try to order some seats, but they weren't sure how long it would take to get them. If they didn't get them, they would sell the car as if it had no package.

Downside is that I didn't get the heated mirrors as this is way to complicated to get installed and would have required the removal of the dash.

In lieu of trying to replace/modify my non-heated seats I went to Amazon.com and ordered two Wagan Tech IN-9738 Heated Seat Cushions. Cost was about $18 each & they work great!

daflake,
thats funny because the dealer i am working with said that it would be illegal for them to take the equipment out of another car to put into mine.....i wonder whats going on here.....
i figured that they could switch the seats, then add the retrofit part and i would be good to go. Then just sell the mini that they took the seats from as not having the heated seat option.....of course, then they would also have to replace the panel that has the swtiches with the panel from mine....

anyone else do what whscullin did?
or just have the heated seat components put into the original seats?

Hey it didn't get above 40 here today. And the low was in the teens.

No disrespect meant to you dudes from Ca, but you have no idea of what cold is! 40 degrees? that's a heat wave. Try getting into one of these puppies at minus 10 degrees with the wind blowing at 15 mph - . Especially with a thin pair of dress pants-instant frozen buns and legs- and I mean instant. The Wagon Tech sounds like a great idea since it can be removed once the temp increases past 40!

Heated Seats

Even though I'm from CA as well, I do have heated seats that I enjoy. But one thing I noticed is only a portion of the seat heats up, the low back area and the area directly under your butt. Although the heat radiates out to other areas, the legs do not heat up as quickly as I would like. So I'm a little disapointed in it's lack of overall heating.

Just a nice to know.

I should have my Wagon Tech heated inserts soon and will send back my observations as to how they work. My wife's car has heated seats so I will be able to compare the two. Hers is the other German brand so while not the same, it will be a good comparison. Still cold here in the Pacific Northwest so should be able to make a good comparison.

Well I got my new heated seat pads and for $17 not too bad. One of the straps broke that holds the backrst to the seat but the heating function is very satisfactory. On low setting it is plenty warm. Only problem I have is hooking up the plug in to the cigarette lighter in the front cubby because I have a organizer in there too. Plug in runs to the back auxillary plug ok and will do some modifaction to make it work off the cubby cigarette lighter.

If you have a euro shelf (or even if you don't) look into installing an auxillary lighter socket for the seat heater (or cell phone, radar detector, etc.)
Smokey did a great write-up here.

Its about 9 degrees outside here in Chicago at 1:00 PM and should drop below zero tonight. Those heated seats sure feel nice.

Cold here too. Appreciate the info on the aux plug in. Sure like the function of the seat warmer, can't say much about the looks. However, it's black like my seat so for winter it will work fine.

Got a question for those of you w/ the Cold Weather Package. What part of the seat is heated? Is it just the seat bottom, or does it do both the bottom and seat back?

Just trying to determine which parts I'll need to budget for. Leather seats and Alaskan winters don't really go together. lol

There are elements on both the seat and backrest.
There are aftermarket kits out there. I put a set in the Miata - makes top down driving more pleasant.
