Rear Fog Light

Hello all. Although this is my first post to the forum, I have been following it for sometime.

I purchased a 2004 MCS (12/03 build) a couple months ago with almost all factory options. However, it did not come with the rear fog light option. As I would like to install this option (probably myself), I need to buy the parts. From what I can tell, I need to buy these through the dealer. Yet, when I contacted the nearest dealer (Portland, OR), they informed me that they cannot sell the parts as that light is illegal in Oregon. As long as I can get the parts, I am not concerned about having another dealer re-program the computer.

All legal issues aside, does anyone know where I can get the necessary parts and their approximate cost?

Thanks in advance for your help!

yeaper, Classic is the place to get that kind of stuff. BTW- NWMINI in Fife, WA will program the toggle for you. They did mine. However, I do live in WA state.

I would suggest that you install the toggle panel yourself so that you are not paying the dealer to do it. Very easy to do.

Thanks for the info! I will be buying the parts soon, and I will have to make a trip up to Fife after that -- it's not a bad drive from Eugene. In fact, Northwest is the place I bought my Mini!

You may want to find out if your MINI already is prewired for the rear fog. The early cabrios were not prewired and the installation was much more involved(and expensive if done at the dealer). I'm not sure if the hardtops are different so you may want to check on this.

Wolfshiem has an '04 which has the older style taillights where the fog light is the top bulb in both taillights. I believe they should be prewired and the only thing needed is the toggle panel (plus dealer programming). Ian Cull (GBMINI) wrote about enabling it on his '03: http://www.gbmini.net/mtblog/archive...rear_fog.shtml

It's definitely pre-wired. I've got a 10/03 build and you just swap out the toggle panel and have the BC1 reprogrammed. As a matter of fact, you can reprogram the computer before you put in the toggles (which is what I did.)

At first they protested, saying that they couldn't program the BC1 without the toggles in. My response - "How does the BC1 know if there's a toggle on the other side of the elastomeric pad?" Just took a few minutes.

Thanks for correcting me!

I forgot the 04s had different tail light arrangements.

Thanks for everyone's help! I ordered a new toggle panel from Classic last week, received it today and it's now installed. Now all I have to do is have the dealer program it and that's it.

With that, anyone intersted in a toggle panel sans the rear fog light control?

Perhaps, I will put it up on eBay.

You have to have the dealer program it? theres no way you can do it yourself?

From my understanding, the toggle switch is not a direct relay...rather, it simply tells the computer to turn the lights on. As a result, the dealer must program the computer to recognize the switch.

Unfortunately, you are correct! Only the dealer can flip the 'switch'!
