Electrical Headlight Lamp Replacement
Uhhhh what? Being someone who has exhausted hundreds of hours into headlight design and HID performance.......i hate to say it cause your my buddy....but you're wrong.
Halogen in halogen> Xenon in halogen.
Here are some pics for you to examine.
The area that the xenon lights actually light up might be slightly brighter...but they barely light up any ground. It's called pencilling...check out this vid. Wait for him to turn down the dark street and notice that the beams project two long lines of bright light.....but put out NO LIGHT to the sides at all. Those two beams might be way brighter....but what good is a set of headlights that only shines on the things directly in front of you?

Now check the last car in this line-up. One headlight is halogen in halogen housing and the other is xenon in halogen housing. When its approaching notice how much glare is coming off the xenon one compared to the stock one. When it gets near the camera notice that the xenon is putting down FAR LESS light than the halogen.

Both of those are real life examples. And here is a movie where tests are being done by proffesionals to prove my point.

And then you have these...both jettas. Notice how much wider the xenons go and dont have two separate hotspots like the hid-drop ins

If you ask me it's one of the dumbest mods. You do it to get that "cool" look that BMW's and Lexus's have as they cruise around. Heck, i even think it looks cool. But if you just throw HIDs in a halogen housing....you look less cool than when you had halogens. There is nothing sillier than a car approaching with big glaring blue headlights. I laugh to myself as i know another cheap-skate wanted that xenon look but couldnt finish the mod by getting real housings.
And for all that they sacrificed much needed lighting, and are harming other drivers.....not a very good trade-off for looking silly

Nice write up rally but its not fair to compare it using a camera which shows glare off the halogens of the 3 cars before the other car comes into view.
that other pic of the car being 5 ft from a wall doesnt do it justice being your not coming head on with people at 5ft....put that car at 50-100 feet away from the wall and i bet you wont see any glare which is the viewing distance of oncoming lights when you get that and see if you get the same glare.
of coarse your going to get that type of glare pulling 5ft from a wall, the light has nowhere to go

How tall are jettas stock...like 5'10" ? Maybe a little less? That glare is going close to 9 -10 feet up the wall. I would love to see a car with stock halogen headlights pull that close and have glare that shows up 4 feet above the car. There might be some fuzziness on the cutoff...but 4 feet up?
What are your thoughts on the test that has a machine to test the glare compared to halogens? They tested the halogens and ricer-hids in the exact same manner and found far more glare on the "xenons".
I will try to find more pics. If you want more information on the poor quality that they offer.....there is some amazing information at www.hidplanet.com
I will continue to post these where ever necessary. It is important for people to realize that they are losing light and making the road dangerous. Atleast i didnt copy-paste my exact post....i took care to write it so that it worked in this thread.
No matter where i got the pics from....its true. The tests show it right in that clip. Less light, more glare, cheap look.
How are you liking your ricer lights?

I must say, you do have alot to say about HIDs as it seems you have done alot of research on this subject. Define "ricer" because i think the setup i have with all my mods would def not be defined as rice just because i put HIDs in my car. my lights are def not "glaring" like your showing in that picture. And where do you get that they arent brighter than stock, you must be crazy. its night n day. just my fogs alone make a big difference and there not in peoples faces as i took a hour drive before and not one flash. I cant say nothing about the testing machine as its proof that there is glare over stock which we all knew to begin with but not enough to bother oncoming traffic if you have them aimed the right way, the glare isnt anymore blinding to a basic xenon set up. theres times im blindin by bimmers, MBs and high end cars coming down the road....xenon and hids are basiclly the same brightness with just your option of different kelvin ratings for color hue
I'll reiterate
However this thread was intended to be a HOW TO not a place to debate which bulb choice (which really depends on your goals, setup regular conditions and even your own eye).
No Rice For Me-Low Carb!
But these lights are great, I forgot who originally told me bout'em but would like to thank them, I think it was a VW or Land Rover site.

I have 4 of these in mine (Hi and Lo's) and they throw plenty of light for me, even though I haven't had them re-aimed since I put them in.
Is there a "how to" that still has all its pics?
I think that should do for a CYA.
First undo the cover to access the lamps, there is a metal latch. I found it helpful to slip the wires off of the cover.

Remove the plug on the back of the lamp, it just pulls straight off. Be sure to take note of where the yellow and brown are( they differ left to right).

To remove the lamp you will notice three metal prongs hold it in place, this is where a second person would be helpful. I was on my own, so I managed to squeeze two of the prongs get the lamp on an angle then squeeze the third and remove the bulb.

Now you can get out the new lamp and install it. BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO TOUCH THE LAMP! The oils in your skin will reduce lamp life and possibly cause the lamp to EXPLODE! If you should touch the lamp be sure to clean it thoroughly. To avoid contact I recommend only holding the lamp with a paper towel (not a tissue) until it is installed.

The base is A-symmetrical so just line it up and it pops right in!
Reconnect the wires and close everything up.

You may find it necessary to re-aim your lights, there are four screws on the back of the lamps up/down and left/right one for regulars and one for the brights.
The old...

...and the new.
