Switched 12 volt in trunk?? HELP!

Hey all - I've searched everywhere for the last 2 days and can't get an answer to this, and alldata.com doesn't have the mini online yet.

I installed my aftermarket amp and sub in the trunk of my 03 MCS and have it running. However, I can't find, rather, don't know where to look for a 12v switched power wire (switched with ignition) for the on/off of the amp. I don't want to run a wire all the way to the front of the car for this. I'm hoping someone will be able to direct me to one, preferably on the passenger side "cubby-hole" in the trunk where the big wire group is. I've checked the cd changer/amp adaptor but it only has constant 12v (if i'm mistaken, please correct me). ANY, repeat, ANY help would be appreciated! P.S., a wiring diagram would be great also...(wink)

run the wire from the HU, do try to do it the hokey *** way.

you have to run an RCA anyways, run the remote at the same time.

i didn't run any wires from the hu. I tapped into the pass speaker wire and added a line transformer. It's in the boot also, so my rca run is 1'...

well, the way i did it in my HK equipped car was:

run a 12v power from the battery to a swtich on the dash - run it uder the consode, under the carpet, under the back seat and then under the boot carpet.

this way you can switch off the subs and run components only (its the best way to do it)

switched power

Every Mini EXCEPT the 03, has a switched outlet in the trunk. Perhaps the line is there on your 03 just not hooked to an outlet.

The outlet is just under the "shelf" on the left side of the car.

JD - All but the 03, just my luck...What do you mean by "shelf"? In the trunk somewhere I assume?

if by 12v switched in the boot you mean the accessory outlet, dont use it!

i tired it to see if this would suffice, it blew the fuse for the lighters and something else. (wasnt too big of a deal)

it lasted about 3 days and it tripped.

Rick, where is it located? Were you using it for power to the amp or REM voltage? I can't imagine that REM voltage would cause any drain that would blow fuses. Powering the amp however would.

haha, of course not to power it!

it was used a switched power for the remote. i still had another switch on my dash to turn it on and off.

i'm not sure why it tripped, but it did it twice, so i didnt mess with it anymore.

you dont need to remove and panels to get power to the amp.

run a jumper from the power on the amp to a swtich on the dash and back to the remote terminal.

oh yeah, and its located on the drivers side rear 1/4 panel. if theres no outlet, you will have to reach inside and disconnect it, there should be one there.

power

If you can find the line for the nonexistent auxiliary power, use it to drive a relay and take fused power direct from the battery. I THINK that outlet is relay driven, BUT just in case it isn't use a reverse biased diode across your relay coil. When the relay opens, the coil puts a spike on the line, and the diode will short the spike to ground, instead of letting it go to your car electronics.

Another place you might steal power...

In the right upper quarter panel, there is an amplifier for the (2) radio antenna(s). Perhaps it is switched.

Then there are the two electrically fired air bag canisters in the quarter panels, but I don't think I would mess with those.
