Does that include the programming charges? From previous posts, I read that some dealers here in the bay area are charging a ton of $$ to program the alarm.

OEM - $165 on ebay, an hour to install (I've got big hands  ) and I plan to be screwed for $50 by the dealer to activate at my next service.I've got an UNGO on my Miata, but am happy with the plug 'n play nature of the MINI OEM (and fearful of any electrical gremlins! )

Yes, but from a private party (don't recall why he didn't keep it.)

I've seen a few come up, but they are not common. You just have to keep your eyes peeled. A few weeks before one went for $205 (and I had bid up to $190) Gotta love an inefficient marketplace.

I couldn't find one today. I'll keep looking. What's the discount price these days if you buy from Sterling or Classic? Anyone know?

edit: found an old post that it's $208 from Sterling. This was late feb 05. I wonder if the prices went up?

Personally, I wouldn't get an alarm put it if it wasn't installed by the factory. I've installed alarms and remote starters for a year or so as a job, and the problems that people run into is rediculous. With al lthe Miltiplex wiring in cars these days, when you splice into an ignition wire, the headlights may decide not to work (since everything is controlled via the BCM).

Also, if someone is going to try and steal your car, chances are, an alarm is not going to deter them is they are a professional. The only thing that an alarm will help with is the stupid kids trying to break into a car. For that, you can go to radio shack and pick up a flashing LED for $5 and install it into your car with a relay so that it comes on when you turn off the car and shuts off when you start the car.

Wow, this is the first time I heard that. As I said in my initial post, I am actually quite happy with the Clifford in my MCoupe, and that was obviously not factory installed.
But thanks everybody for your input.
Cheers,
H

If you have the factory designed alarm installed, none of this is an issue.

The factory alarm is actually "built in" to the car already - the original cars electronics handles the alarm functionality. The alarm install "simply" adds the sensors and siren needed to make the alarm useful. All the wiring and electronics is already present.

The convertible alarm has motion detectors, but limited to the footwell areas. See: http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthread.php?t=80107

Is the OEM MINI alarm armed/disarmed from the car's key fob, or is another key chain item required? I would jump at the OEM alarm if it all worked from my key (less crap on my already too large keychain).

It works from the original remote key.
When you lock the car it arms, when you unlock the car it disarms.
Used to be, a second lock would arm it without the interior movement sensors, but I think that is different on the newest ones ...

Maybe one of the vendors can come up w/ a kit that includes the wiper stalk LED that just flashes when the car is off. Just a cheap deterent instead of the whole alarm install.

05+ OEM alarm

Just ordered the 05+ OEM alarm. I skipped the stalk, so the price was only $195-20%+shipping. Should get here for around $175.

I'll install it myself. Might try to hunt down the lead for the OEM stalk mounted idiot light. I'm not a fan of the placement of the red light. If anything I'll run a line to the center console and install an LED there. $2 in parts versus $150-20% for the OEM stalk.
