Trailer Wiring

Anyone do trailer wiring on their Mini? Can you just tap into the wires with having codes being thrown?

If you need to have a trailer in tow behind your MINI, you will need to have it wired up for lighting. This kit includes the module, wiring, and instructions you need to wire up your MINI so it will work with trailer brake and turn signal lights.

I purchased the mini bike mount, and I am in the process of swapping the bumper so I can attach it. I’d like to get the wiring set up for it (it is a 13 prong European caravan plug), but I need to know if I can tap into the wires, or if it would result in error codes popping up.

these are the install instructions for the module I mentioned for F series .....

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W3k...HTJoHGrBM/view

this line "Using the supplied blue connector clips, connect the wires with a pair of pliers. Do this for all four connections
required in table above." tells me there is no issue with simple wire taps (with THIS module anyway)

I'm looking to add a Tekonsha wiring adapter to my early '13 Clubby so's to light up the ( 200 lb) Trailex SUT220-S I bought to haul my (100 lb) 17' Waterlust canoe to the water.

Hitch adapter install went well so now it's time to add wiring to bring power to trailer's lights.

This Tekonsha system's the kind that has electronic gizmos that snap onto the MINI'S various lighting wires so there's no wire-splicing needed. Idea is everything's done off 'signal-sensing' in the adapter module to drive the trailer's lights.

BUT I needs to run a 12VDC 15A-capable wire from the battery (15A fused up front!) back to the module in the boot.

This step's got me intimidated a bit.

I know the interior's pretty well "fixed in place" with carpets front & back basically one-piece, held in place by trim that's not always easy to get off. (I had the passenger's seat out for a few months back in '14 during a move so I could haul more stuff....)

Add to that, repairs needed last year after the drains to the sunroof gutter came loose, allowed rainwater in that affected that electronic box in the p-side footwell... rear hatch doors kept opening when I braked is what clued me in to the problem, besides the gallons of water that sloshed up into said footwell one bright morning.

Anyone done anything similar as far as adding a wiring adapter like this?

Vendor says using 12V lighter socket in back very well might work yet product's instructions indicate device should best be connected to uninterrupted 12VDC 24/7/365 or it 'loses programming" makes it operate as intended, once having been installed then programmed.

Any and all suggestions / hints comments most welcome.
