Discussed many times. Nobody's done it successfully. It's not plug and play.

To answer your question - Yes

But its a real pain of a conversion; you would need:

Navigation Screen
Navigation Drive
Navigation Drive Tray
Navigation CD or DVD
Navigation Wiring Harness
Navigation Antenna (aka Shark Fin)

Ok so theres no need to buy a new one? So basically i can use the nav panel so the "idiot" lights will work. I will still have my original mileage. And i can change the screen to a 2din stereo, ipad or carputer? Just need the idiot lights and fuel guage

So I guess you just wanted to fit something into the Nav screen space, and didn't want to actually install the OEM Nav. The space is very shallow and won't fit a 2-DIN component. An iPad Mini is way too large. A Galaxy Note or iPhone 6 Plus would be a good fit. Look at this project: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ibilities.html

To retain the mileage, you might need a new panel that surrounds the screen. It has the electronics that controls the tach+speedo cluster and warning lights/gas gauge, and is one of the places where the odometer reading is stored. It would have to be coded to your car by a dealer. Item # 1:

The chrono pack is quite rare and Nav swap even more rare, and you probably won't find definitive answers to all the information you want. You'll have to plunge into the project and try to figure it out as you go.

thanks i thought that the mileage is in the dual tach. hmm.... actually i want to use the nav screen for a backup camera if it's possible. i know it has been done before. if ever i'll be using the nav screen i will be needing this

Navigation Drive
Navigation Drive Tray
Navigation CD or DVD (i'm not sure if i can use this in ASIA)
Navigation Wiring Harness

Basically i can the drive tray and the nav drive. however, i can't find the nav wiring harness im trying in ebay but can't find one:(

i don't think i'll be needing the antenna as it will not be use as a GPS unless it will work in my country.

question, you can also view the onboard computer in the nav screen correct?

The navigation unit is a single box that fits under the seat and includes the Nav computer with CD/DVD drive. I doubt you will be able to find an OEM Nav wiring harness for sale. You will have to rip it out of a wrecked MINI that originally had Nav installed.

MINI sold an official retrofit kit, and I installed it on my R52.

However, this kit was probably discontinued many years ago and no longer available. There are some aftermarket interfaces available. Search the web for "bmw navigation video input".

Given the serious difficulty of finding parts and the amount of effort to make it work, I suggest that you simply replace your stereo with an aftermarket head unit with slide out screen.

Its was a cool kit and I remember when that came out

It has been NLA'd as well as the kit components .

if i can use the nav screen for the alpine camera i might just jump on it hehe... if you didn't code the nav screen in your car the only problem that you will encounter is the mileage that will show up in my dual tach?

It doesn't exist as a separate part. It comes bundled in a harness with other audio cabling. That's how they install it at the factory.

I've thought about doing this retrofit for a few years now but unfortunately as of 2015, the CD and DVD based navigation systems found will no longer updated. So although it would be nice to have the nav system screen in an r53, it is outdated. Anyways we can always revert back to mapquest or use our new smartphones for navigation.

Im wondering if it is already prewire or something. Other than the navigation (gps), what other option does the screen do? Onboard computer? Im from other country so i think i wouldnt be able to use the gps on the screen however, the reason why i want to put an oem screen is for the alpine camera that i bought

Yes, it has the OBC as well as the GPS. That's about it. I have the (rare) IntraveeII, so for me it also serves as a visual ipod player.

Maybe an alternative for your nav could be as I have done and house your phone in a Tachometer:

It works great for me, I have all the major things, music, nav and handsfree phone in one unit.

Cheers, CoopeR50

I successfully removed the Chrono and replaced it with the NAV unit, although I did not install the Full Nav System, I have a 6.5" LCD screen in place of the Genuine one which is driven via a HDMI interface, so basically any device with a hdmi output can display on the screen. I also have a USB resistive touchscreen connected also, which I have connected to a small android PC/board, capable of running my NAV apps, music, etc.

I was lucky to find a brand new control unit #1 in pic above which was coded to match my cars settings.

Do you have any pics ? Would love to see. I've got the factory Sat Nav and absolutely hate it. So looking at other options.

I am interested in doing this too. I would like to get the tach and speedo from the chrono pack for my column and do a touchscreen android/RPi based pc for music and nav. Can you put up some pics? Anyone know how much it is to have the dealer recode the new speedo?
