Electrical Problems with wifi obd2 scanner
Problems with wifi obd2 scanner
Anyone running wireless with apps such as dash command having any issues? My iphone connected to the mini VGate elm327 with no issues. The dash command app had issues trying to connect and then once connected it tossed a check engine light along with a few miscellaneous error symbols and then stalled out my 2010 MCS.
I am using the ELM327 and the Torque Pro app on my Android I have no problems at all, and it has already paid for itself with finding some codes and letting me know how to solve them. I have tried some other apps, but found that it couldn't connect or find the Bluetooth connection. I'm not using wifi or usb cable as some of them have.
Palmer contacted me and said the hardware was most likely the problem. They said it was physically blocking all communication on the BUS causing warning lights to go off. The scanner was returned and I ordered a plx kiwi 2.

When you get the kiwi let us know, so people know which ones work and which may cause problems.

This is the WiFi unit I obtained last week for my iPhone. It works well although I had to input addresses and port manually. It is also a little long. The advantage of getting a WiFi unit even for Android users is that your phone can still connect with your vehicles bluetooth for phone usage. $21.69 & free shipping.
I ordered the same thing but they sent me the Bluetooth version which doesn't work with iPhone. Ended up going to the local store and getting a kiwi2 wifi. I was surprised cellular data works while connected to the kiwi wifi.

So as i wait for my Kiwi 2, delivery on Friday, i tried out the same elm327 as posted by Jim. a friend of mine from work had a spare. my iphone picked up the wifi with no issues. the app took a while to connect. i finally got it after setting the cellular data off. a few questions.
*does the cellular data have to be off entirely or just for the app?
*pepper, you said you keep it on with the kiwi?
*is anyone changing the OBD2 settings under vehicle or just leaving the #s to the default settings?

I've had no problems with this one:

Cellular data stays on. - I still get emails, notifications, voice calls, etc, when the app is running.
Default OBDII settings.
And it is back in stock.

Okay. So I went back to my car, plugged the scanner in. Got it connected right away. Validated PIDs, went back into dashboard, swiped to get into another screen and the car shut off with the engine light on. I am completely stumped at this point. I am hoping the kiwi works.

I was thinking, let me ask, is anyone using the iphone also using bluetooth through the MINI while using the obd2 scanner?
I have my bluetooth on so my phone goes through my MINI. i'm wondering if that could be causing issues.

I am. My device is wifi, but when someone calls on Bluetooth, the app disconnects but nothing bad happens, I just have to reconnect when the call is over.
Don't sweat it, you just got a piece of crap device. All will be good when you get the pixi installed. Then you can starting having fun.
Yep, leave cell data on, all settings default, also have the MINI factory bluetooth, iPhone 4S. Have to agree sounds like your box is bad. When you get your kiwi it should be smooth sailing. I have noticed the app disconnects from the car when I put stop data logging after a long session.
it suprises me that 2 for 2 now is causing issues. at least with the one i tried today, it only shut the car off instantly and lit the check engine light. the Vgate caused the car to rough idle with flickering warning lights. the Vgate did work fine with my Ipad running ios7.

Here's a pic
I got the kiwi2 set up, app connected right away, using all default settings in the vehicle manager. I activated all PIDs and was checking all different screens before, during, and after a drive. Polled back in the driveway, shut app and car off. Restarted both, went into vehicle manager again and the car instantly stalled out with cel. I restarted the car, reconnected the app, ran a diagnostic scan with no error codes. Car ran fine and app was running perfectly again. Better luck with the kiwi but still a little concerned that it tossed the code and stalled.

I just purchased this dongle. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ls_o01_s00_i00 Looks exactly the same as the one you posted. Do you think they are the same product? Also with your dongle do you have to unplug it every time you exit your car or can it just be left plugged in without draining the battery?
I haven't kicked it yet but I do wish it was half as long. Anyway it links immediately and appears to transmit good data with no apparent lag. Good luck
