Interior lites won't go/stay off

Problem w/2002 MCS...dome/trunk/footwell lites would not automatically go off. If you press and hold dome lite switch, they shut off. Alternately, a Mini tech at BMW says may be passenger door sensor...it thinks door is open. Also noticed that door lock was not all the way down. His suggestion (which seems to work so far) is to lock the car every time you get out which lowers the passenger door lock all the way down. If lites come on during driving (and you may hear a "clicking" noise like the door is trying to lock), press the inside lock control to lock the doors. A "work around", but better than costly repair.
