Horn toot when locking/unlocking

I have no alarm on my 2009 MCSC.

Is there a way to have the horn toot when locking/unlocking with the remote?

From previous forum info apparently this is not availalble if you don't have the alarm system . If you just must have an audible indication of lock/unlock you're going to have to rig your own. A possible DIY approach would be to add a simple piezo buzzer/beeper (about $5 at Radio Shack). The solenoid that locks/unlocks your fuel filler door might be a good power source.

I don't have an alarm on my 2010 MINI, but the horn toot is an option when locking the door. It can be programed through the turn signal stalk.

I looked in the 2009 manual and found nothing about this unless you have an alarm where a horn symbol shows up. I scrolled through that area with the stalk and the horn symbol did not appear. So unless you have done this and can tell me how in detail, I will assume it cannot be done on a 2009.

Now this is an idea I can work with.

I do wish the remote would work from a greater distance away from the MINI. My Honda works from 150+ feet and I can use the remote for a locator in a parking lot when I have forgotten what I drove and/or where I parked. I can only use the MINI remote from about 50 feet and only when approaching from the front right and holding it over my head...and by then I can usually see the car. My desire is to have the top down before I get to the MINI and not have to wait.

I've tried on my 2010 and haven't been successful. Do you have comfort access?

ammodave,

I took out my left tailight and found the wires to the solenoid. White for lock and yellow for unlock. Radio Shack has a 90db chime for $10, so I may put this on the lock wire. However...my wife's fob locks the doors when she drives away and I wonder if the chime will sound when the doors lock. Hmmmm

I was thinking about the chime setting off when driving away also... I don't think the gas cap locks when the doors lock while driving, when I pump gas it is unlocked and all I have done is opened the door manually... I will have to test it... BTW, a great idea to use the gas cap solenoid...

This sounds like an idea that could work! Might it be easiest to get two buzzers with two different tones for lock and unlock and wire it to each wire? Or are there buzzers that will chime differently based on the way its wired?

Curious how you could out which wire was lock/unlock, did you use a voltmeter to test a current when hitting the lock/unlock?

Please keep us updated! I've been wanting to do this in my CA no-alarm cooper S for a long time but never really got into digging for a solution

Yes, I used a volt meter. I haven't proceeded with a "beeper" yet.

OK, to answer your question...when I lock the car and walk away, after a few steps I think, "Did I lock the car?" So I press the lock button again. That's when I would like an audible chirp so I was sure I did lock the car.

I went to Radio Shack and looked at their piezo buzzers, but that's what they are called - "buzzers." No one could tell me what sounds they made, e.g. buzz or beep, so I didn't get one. Of course I guess I could buy one take it home and try it and return it if I didn't like it but I don't want to do that. It's really not all that important.

On another note, if you have your fob set for automatic locking, as mjgood said, the gas door does not lock.

Also when I've walked away from my car, sometimes I think did I lock it? Having comfort accesss my keys stay in my pocket so sometimes I don't have them in my hand when I get out of the car. But to remember if I pressed the button is harder to remember than remembering if I heard the audible chirp while I was walking away. It's more of a reaction/response to u pressing the button, so it helps make it easier for you to think backfor the sound when you're too far to wall back reasonably

Here's one. I'm on my iPad so the link is a mobile link. You can search "piezo buzzer car" and it's the crossfire one, he lists a part number too.

So I installed this one... And it's too quiet when u piece everything back together. I'm not sure if maybe because indon't have the best ground(not bare metal, I think it's painted) so maybe the connection isn't great and it's not as loud? But it's certainly not like the one in the video. I can post how mine sounds with the headlight out and the trunk open.. It's pretty loud but I didn't make a video after closing it back up

I can't get yours (I don't have a mobile device) but I got the crossfire one on youtube.com. I don't like the beep. I was hoping for a chirp. The manager at Radio Shack said their piezo buzzers buzzed. I don't want a buzz either.

Now I am considering a cheap Honda civic single horn. I did find a cheap horn on Amazon but the shipping is too much. I think I will try my local NAPA Store.

So I decided to try the Radio Shack piezo siren p/n 273-079 @ $5.79. It is rated @ 120db and is loud, Of course it is louder in the open than buttoned up. I tapped into the white (lock) wire and put a ground fork under the bolt that hold the ground plate. I may decide it is too loud and put a couple layers of duct tape over the speaker but it is in my garage. It might be OK in an open parking lot. Time will tell.

Well, I'm glad to see that the gas cap solenoid power will work for this application but that siren is a bit too loud for my taste. The search for a suitable buzzer/beeper continues....

ammodave,

I tried it outdoors and it isn't that loud. Also I can put duct tape on the speaker and quiet it. If you would like a buzzer, RS has quite a few, from 75db up, starting ~ $3.00. Although they said I could bring it back, the sales clerk opened the package and let me take it to my MINI to try. I touched the wires to the battery terminals so I could see how it sounded before buying. Maybe your RS will let you do the same.

Silly question, but don't you guys hear the "thunk" of the doors locking when you press the button? I find it to be audible at quite the distance from my car.

I was thinking the below but didn't want to come across as argumentative.

I heard the loud thunk, I see the lights flash. Heck with such a short effective range you cant be that far away to lock it and not year the doors.

Too many years on noisy flightlines have reduced my hearing a bit so this geezer needs a little help .
