blaster coils

I saw a ad for an MSD blaster coil. It costs $85. First, they claim more HP and faster throttle response without sacrificing fuel economy. Does anyone have one of these or something similar? Is this false advertising or does it actually help? Is it better instead to install upgraded spark plug wires or high performance spark plugs?

Not sure where you saw that ad but I do not believe it was from MSD?

http://www.msdignition.com/default.aspx

Also look at the ad if it was a Blaster which unit are referring to. And was there any * astricks that may reference the addition of wires and/or an DIS unit?

Basic MSD info on the 4 tower coil for the Mini:
  • 77:1 turns ratio and lower primary resistance produce high voltage output
  • Works with stock ignition as well as MSD Ignitions
  • CARB E.O. Approved
While there has already been much debate on this I would recommend finding a fellow MINI enthusiast that would be willing to let you try it out for a day. If you do get that chance take careful notice to the start ups.

If you do not have any problem with the OEM coil do not want a nice looking RED coil and are not doing engine performance upgrades that may effect the limatations of the OEM coil then it may not be to you advantage at this time to get one.

I run the MSD and love it BTW.

MOSS Minis ad
http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=70161

Not to put a fine point on this but:

improves throttle response, mileage and power! These new bolt-in coils are designed with improved materials and windings to produce a stronger spark. This improved spark helps burn the fuel mixture more efficiently resulting in a smooth idle and improved mid range rpm power. Plus the unique MSD red finish compliments the engine bay nicely. Prior to ordering check the pins to see if you have round or flat.

They do not claim : more HP and faster throttle response without sacrificing fuel economy.

They do say, improves throttle response, mileage. Which any improvement in the ignition system should do that anyway. They do state improved material and windings. Which is very accurate. The improved winding alone makes it a improvement over the OEM coil. And any improved spark will benefit the combustion cycle on any engine.

SO what Moss Mini did was extrapolate a little beyond the MSD ad.

But no false advertising.
