Yellow high beams???

So, went to the LA auto show , bought a set of bulbs from a booth ,
asked the guy if they could fit on a mini cooper s fog system, he looks up in his computer and says yes, ten bucks no biggy, 3000k xenon plasma yellow, problem? THEY ARE H7'S . Didn't know till' i got back on NAM and checked. FEEL like a moron , however, here is the question.....

My manual says that high beam and low beam take H7's. Just to use the bulbs i might put them in my high beams for canyon driving and flashing people out of the way when they try to cut me off or change lanes right into me (405 freeway).

Anyone think this is a good idea? Is it illegal?

Thanx for the feedback.

I believe they are only "approved" for off road use.

I paid a heck of a lot more for my PIAA Ion-Crystal bulbs, but I love them for my high beams.

Give your bulbs a try and see if you like them. Can't hurt.

Who made these $10 bulbs anyway?

The brand is HALO, some Japanese company, the booth was selling them off like hot cakes.

I put the bulbs in today which was kinda scary if your doing it for the first time. tried desperately not to touch the bulb with my dirty fingers while also trying to lodge the thing in. In the process of doing all this i dropped my stock high beam bulb on the floor as well. Hope it works if i need it at some point.

Other than that the bulbs look pretty cool reflecting off the back, but haven't turned them on yet. I'll see if i can post a pic up in my gallery at some point.

I don't know what the CA laws are, yellow highs don't have a very far reach which is what you want with the high beam,if you can legally do it they're better off in in the lows, and most advantageous in the fogs (which would mean selling or trading). If you look at my sig you'll see I've got almost all yellows, except the driving lights that more and make up for the reduction of range from the yellows. Each to his own, and I'd check with CA law first just to make sure you're all set (and CA is notorious for strict, nonsensical equip regs)

I've had yellow DRLs/High beams for almost a year now. My bulbs are from Hoen and were $30 or so. I find them to be very fitting for high beams too, because I can use them for cutting through fog and snow or for better visibility on snow.

just for the record...

my fogs are H7's....my Hi-beams are H11's
-I think its just an early 02 prod. thing, even my manual says the fogs should be H11's

anyway, I bought some 2500k H11's for the fogs initially, which didn't fit, and used them in my Hi-beams and I like them...don't have to use them often though w/the Xenons

I was thinking about putting yellow bulbs in my highs too. Do you have any pics? I think it would look cool as DRL.

I have yellow fogs in, and no problems w/ the law just yet. I think you can get away with a relatively normal colored bulb (just either yellow or a blueish), but those show bulbs (green, red..) will get you busted for sure. Since Many GMs have yellow/amber DRLs, I think you'll get away w/ it IMO.

I guess it just depends where you live and how much extra time your cops have on their hands.

Here what my yellow fogs look like. Think yellow DRLs would be overkill?

I think yellow DRLs would look amazing. I'm totally for it. This is the best shot I have of my DRLs. Obviously my lights are tinted so it affects the brightness a bit.

It's your car, do as you please.

Right now I'm driving a loaner, a Chili Red MC convert. with CVT and apparently the full blown chrome package. It may pain you to hear it, but I can't think of a car I would rather drive less than this thing. Looks horrible, transmission is horrible, and it's slow.

oh and fyi yellow or any colored headlights would be technically illegal in CA. high beams, since they're never on a lot, would be probably ok but a cop *could* ticket you if you're unlucky. it's a cool idea tho, i might end up doing it. i want to do yellow fogs, too. you can have yellow fogs, pretty sure they're street legal. one more warning. i had a pair of white piaas in my truck for a while and they don't last long due to the temperature (and imho crappy piaa quality). these halo bulbs you bought, they might burn out way faster than oem ones

Old thread, but I went with Hella Optilux yellow high beams and fog lights. Looks great. almost worth it to enable DRL's just to have yellow showing when I'm driving. :D

One question, do the DRL's come off when parking lights are on? or only when low beams are on? I want to be able to run parking lights with fog lights without the DRL's running.
