Electrical R56 Driving Light Switching
R56 Driving Light Switching
I just ordered a 07 MCS, and have a few questions about installing driving lights. The dealer's price is a little higher than I anticipated, and I'm not fond of adding another interior switch.
Has anyone installed driving lights without installing an additional interior switch? Specifically, has anyone wired them in such a way that with the factory fog light switch "on", and the low beams "on", the fog lamps and low beams are "on" (of course), and when you switch to high beams, the fog lamps turn "off" and the driving lights turn "on" (along with the high beams, of course - none of the "accessorie lights" would be on when the fog lamp switch "off")?
As a crazier idea, has anyone hooked up the driving lights to the rear fog lamp switch on the upper interior console, and used the rear fogs as additional brake lights?
Any general recommendations on which lights and brackets to go with? I'm looking for two upper grill mounted driving lights.
Any tips appreciated...

The fog light switch just tells the BC1 that you want those lights on. Then the BC1 sends the appropriate signal to the fogs. Given that, I don't know how you could get the fog light switch to serve both purposes.
The best tip I can give you is dont mess with the function of the BC1, you can cause a heap of problems, and probably void your warrenty. I am putting the factory OEMs on myself, it is a pain in the a$$ but worth it in the long run.The kit comes with modified grille ,brackets, wiring harness, fuse ,lamps, switch and colorline dash part. Pricey but everything fits.
Yeah, I would have to say, the only other option I would suggest is go with some aftermarket fogs (PIAA, Hella or similar). There are a couple options out there for mounting up front. Probably cheaper than the MINI lights, too. Find power, ground and route a simple on/off switch & you can have them on any time you want..
If you want to have the driving lights come on only when the high beams are switched on (and not use an extra switch) you can wire it through a STDP relay. The factory fogs are already wired to turn off when the high beams are used so run a direct power wire fused 18" from the battery connection to terminal 87 on the relay, the lights power wire to terminal 30 and leave 87a unused. Run a ground wire to terminal 85. Tap into the high beam wire which is grey/green and is found at the body control module located behind the passenger kick panel. Then ground the individual lights and when the high beam is turned on the coil in the relay will cause the relay to send power directly from the battery to the driving lights (without causing any undue strain on the headlight circuit). When the high beam is switched off the coil will cut and the relay will cut power to the driving lights. Hope this helps...
