Home Charger Experience

What are you using for Level 2 charging at home. I went to the MINI website and they list several options (
Amazon Amazon
), but there are other makes on the market (e.g., Blink). Appreciate any experience or advice you have to offer.

I have a giant (although the big box is mostly empty inside) 48-Amp ClipperCreek EVSE I purchased last year after reading the MINI Cooper SE could charge at 11 kW. Later, I learned the 11 kW is only for 3-phase AC found across the ocean and 7.4 kW is the limit for single-phase AC power in the USA. The upside of this EVSE is the giant "thunk" of the internal relay when I plug in my MINI Cooper SE; the downside is the very thick charging cord that's a pain to wrangle.

I just saw this $315 Chinese dual-voltage (adapter needed for 120 V) 32-Amp Level 2 KHONS charging cable from a Tucson, AZ, vendor. It appears to provide both the advantages of maximum Level 2 charging speed and minimum size for portability. It even has a display that provides information I wish my EVSE could reveal. The only thing missing is UL certification, but it's been around since 2017 for whatever that's worth. Here's a review.of this EVSE by someone who bought one.

I recently purchased a Grizzl-E Classic, and have an electrician booked to install the 240V outlet in my garage next Friday.

We already have a Tesla, so for my MINI (arriving this week), I got a second Tesla HPWC and an adapter that accepts the Tesla nozzle and outputs to a J1772. Rationale:
1. It's a 48Amp connector with a 24' cable for $500 (plus $200 for the J1772 adapter).
2. It automatically load shares (by communicating with my first HPWC via a cable), so I can plug both cars in and never worry about exceeding my breaker.
3. I can charge a mixture of Teslas and J1772.

My ceiling is 11'6" and with the slope of the floor gets closer to 12' by the opening. Lift #2 gets installed next week, since i have the room.

I have a ChargePoint Home Flex. It works okay but not perfect.
Problems I have with it:
1. The plug seems not to be fitting the port on the car perfectly. I need to apply quite an amount of force to the upper portion of the plug to make it "clip" properly. Otherwise it won't start charging. I spent around 15 minutes to charge the first time at home.
2. The car and the charger has issue communicating how fast to charge. It always starts charging at 3.7kW after plugging in. And I found that it will only charge full speed at 7.4kW if I pull the plug and plug it in again. Now every time I got home I will plug it in, wait 5 seconds, pull the plug and plug again to make it charge at full speed.

A little bit annoying but tolerable.

That EVSE sounds like a PITA. Not only is it difficult to plug in, but it makes you do it twice! For some reason MINI delivers the car to charge at the slower speed. I assume that you've set your MINI to charge at the full 7.4 kW or it wouldn't switch to that level after you re-plug. In any case, check that setting again.

ClipperCreek here

We use our ClipperCreek Level 2 only for quick charging, use the level 1 that came with our 2020 Chevy Bolt EV most of the time. We only charge to 80% for daily use. Though the Bolt does have a 259 mile range. That range decreased to about 210 in the winter. So when we charge to 80%, we get about 165 mile range. Perfect for our use.

Very happy with our ClipperCreek, made in USA. 3 year warranty.

I haven't played with the settings for charging on the mini, and to be honest, the instructions in the manual have confused me a bit. What settings should the charging be set for? I have a chargepoint on a 240v/50amp line. It always charges at an indicated 7.3kw and takes about 3-4 hours from 20%. Should I have it it at level 2max?

That sounds about right. From what I've read, the Mini will pull at most 31amps, which at 240V is around 7.4kw.

on the i3, I always set it at MAX. I will do the same on the SE.
