Yep, they did that for strength. You could always mod it yourself.

Not really that much, they need the service work these days for MINI so they will drop it and change it.

That sounds like either inaccurate information or bad advice, I can't figure out which.
There are plenty of holes in that hunk of sheet metal, so it doesn't seem like it should compromise strength to move a few around to accommodate routine maintenance. I used to have a skid plate on my Jetta, that had a metal cover that screwed in to allow maintenance. Paid for itself more than once, not because I lowered the car, but because of where I took it and road debris.
There are plenty of holes in that hunk of sheet metal, so it doesn't seem like it should compromise strength to move a few around to accommodate routine maintenance. That's what they told me in the design as we are direct with them. But people always on NAM like to mod and do their own thing on the forums. Just giving them a heads up on why it was that way.

Then Mods to make service holes would be bad advice if it's true and doing so will reduce the integrity of the product. These cars aren't already enough of a PITA to work on without adding to it. That said, a beefed up skid plate can be well worth the price paid if you find yourself bottoming out from time to time.
