Need more burble/pop

Hey all, I have an '04 MCS w/Miltek Catback. I would like to obtain more burble and pop. Does anyone know as to how I can do that? TIA

Get the Dinan exhaust! Your test drive of my car Friday certainly confirmed the crazy "pop pop" in this exhaust

If you're willing to live with increased sound levels, removing the resonator (not the muffler) from your exhaust will increase the volume of the popping/burbling. The pops/burble are always there when you decelerate - how much of them you hear and how loud they are is a function of your exhaust system. I don't think it's possible to selectively enhance the burble without an overall increase in noise level.

The exhaust on my car is 2-1/2" from the cat back to a single small muffler (about 7" by 7" by 3"), and then out the back of the car. It's probably louder than most people would like, but the popping/crackling on deceleration sounds beautiful. I'm about to have my muffler shop cut out a section of the exhaust pipe and put flanges on the cut ends so that I can swap a resonator in and out of the system whenever I want to, since the exhaust does drone pretty badly on the freeway.

Isn't the resonator the catalytic converter? If so, won't that send an SES and if so, how do you get rid of the SES because I have heard that putting a different/dummy O2 sensor doesn't work.

Yep, Uber patented "Burble in a CAN"

No, most systems have both a resonator AND a muffler, both of which are behind the catalytic converter. On the factory exhaust, the resonator is the muffler-looking thing on the passenger side, and the actual muffler is the one on the driver's side. If you've read about the "one-ball" exhaust mod, all that involves is bypassing/removing the factory resonator.

On the Milltek, the resonator is the cylindrical canister right behind the catalytic converter.

And since your resonator attaches directly to the cat, it would be easy/cheap for a muffler shop to replace it with a piece of straight pipe and three flanges. If you didn't like the sound with the resonator removed, you could put a flange on the other end of the resonator and swap it back in place of the straight pipe.

His car is an 04, not an 05/06. I thought on motoringfile an article said the burble was ECU programming? Now when I switched from a JCW exhaust on a 04 to Borla race, it had a tiny bit of burble but still not anywhere near an OEM 05.

I put a JCW exhaust on my '05 MCS - burble and pop are a lot less than it had with the stock exhaust.

I think the ECU programming was to enhance/amplify the burbles & pops, but from his original post, it sounds like he's getting a little bit already with his Miltek. I figure that if he's getting any at all, he'll get more with the resonator removed. I don't know how the Miltek sounds with the resonator removed, but he'll still have the dual mufflers, and removing the resonator is both cheap and easily reversible.

I do get a tiny bit, but want more. Scavenger has an '06 with a Dinan exhaust and his burbles/pops pushing the clutch in to shift and letting off the accelerator. I really like that and would like to get it to that point.

Scavenger, can you put up an audio clip of it please.

I got a pulley, intake, and exhaust (Milltek) all installed on the same day at AMVIV. I then got the JCW flash for my ecu, and I've got more burble than I ever did before on my '05. I used to just get it at low speed, now I even get it on the freeway when I back off the throttle. It must be in the JCW programming.

I'll have to figure the best way to record it

my friend has an 03 JCW, not sure what flash he has, but with OBX 4-2-1 header and OE cat he gets alot of burble pop, when i was following him one day i heard it with my windows down and sunroof open. Not loud, but sporty, really really nice. If you dont want to drop the 200 on a header, just take the pre cat out of the OE system, i hear that has really good results, run a search for clarification if need be on the operation im talking about
hope this helps
Beecher,

Beecher,
You know, perhaps it is a header thing. I don't have one, so that is next on the list. Thanks everyone for posting

I had the Milltek cat back only on my '04 for several months. I then installed an OBX header (from Helix with an OEM cat welded on it -- and I got it ceramic coated at the same time.) Now it has just what I was looking for in the burble area. I turn the radio off and roll down the windows to go through underpasses and tunnels. Sweet music.

May be I'm crazy, but seriously, I heard more burble/pop after I have my GP IC on.

You should know, it may have more to do with the fact that your car is an 06 than the exhaust types.

2005 & 2006 MCS's are tuned to have more burble and pop (The ECU actually dumps fuel on lift to make the car burble more)

If you want the maximum noise/pop, do what I did. 2.5" all the way back. No cat. and no mufflers. Simply 2 resonators, one just about under the driver seat and one by the battery. On occassion I'll get a good crack.

Perhaps, but I don't have a stock ECU. I have the Dinan Stage 5, so maybe it also carries over whatever settings are needed for good "pop pop".
