Which short shift kit to get? Any feedback?

I'm trying to pick a quality short shift kit. I found a B&M Short Shift kit, a Cravenspeed Short Shift kit, and a Alta Short Shift kit. Any feedback on any of those?

Try the Helix kit - inexpensive, simple, and very effective.

a bit more info than the other posts:

the helix is the most inexpensive because it is an attachment that will shorten the throws of the shifter. same shifter height, shorter throws. stock shifter with an attachment

the alta is height/throw adjustable. the lower you go the shorter the throw.
this adjuster is a ring that has 3 allen head screws that lock the shifter in place...
this is a black shifter.

craven's is the same premise as the alta except there is a screw/nut ring instead of the three allen screws. also, this particular product has an option for a shift well cover that replaces your boot. plus it's black...

b&m is not adjustable but is a complete shifter replacement like the alta and the craven. chrome shifter.

fitment:
all fit well, however, with the craven and the alta, if you decide to drop the shifter all the way to the bottom you need to remove the dust shield for the shifter to fit. there really is no need to drop it all the way down anyways, the shift throw will be much tighter at the middle setting.

good luck with your decision

^ Terrific breakdown of the most popular SS kits on the market, glnr13!

I went with the Alta SS because it was adjustable. Turns out that the only times I fiddled with the height adjustment after the initial install was because the locking screws came loose (user error - I didn't tighten them down enough). At the lowest height, shifting requires some major effort and is quite a workout. In retrospect, I would probably have been fine with the Helix SS, particularly since I have no problems with keeping the stock height.

TobiasMWesten, what are your primary considerations?

yes, and yes. the alta is a threaded shifter which comes with an adapter for the stock shift **** or the alta threaded ****.

same goes for the craven except i dont know if the adapter "comes" with it.

I've had a B&M on my car for almost 2 years and am very happy with it. It will take the stock shift ****, and except for the height, can look totally stock.

I have a B&M on my 05 S. One of the nicest things about the kit is that it includes aluminum bushings to replace the rubber ones from stock. This gives the shifts a more definite and less mushy feel. The old version of the kit (for the older cars) re-uses the stock shifter housing completely. The new version (late 04+) replaces the bottom cover with a new metal one, you'll also have to massage the heat shield back into place.

I've had mine since Christmas and just love it. Bought a black shift well cover to go with it two weeks ago at AMVIV. P.S Be sure to leave the bottom cover off the cable box or you won't be able to adjust the height very much.

ok that sounds promising. thanks alot for the help. one more thing: when i shorten the shifter, does it make it alot harder to push into the gears?

I does make it harder to push the shifter but I think you would need to have it at it's lowest setting to be TOO hard. I've got mine set at a perfect height for me and the shifts just click right in with just the right amount of resistance for me and absolutely no slop.

stock boot works fine. easy to popoff in the event that you want to adjust the shifter... just pull up on the left and right sides of the shift boot ring.

either way the stock boot works with all short shifters. it's just a piece of material...

M7...oops...I did not say that...

If you must have one NOW, I'd choose Cravenspeed...if you'd prefer a radical design, wait and see...

A radical design for a short shifter?

Why don't we reinvent the wheel while we're at it.
