Drivetrain Quaife LSD/Clutch Install help
Quaife LSD/Clutch Install help
I'm doing this myself... Its all apart and I have some questions regarding the installation of my clutchmaster clutch/LW flywheel and Quaife unit.
I installed new bearings on the Quaife unit and was wondering if people are changing the races also?
Torque setting for the ring gear to the Quaife unit ?
What tranny fluid should I use ? ... I heard Redline MTL... synthetic gear oil..
When installing the clutch disc... does the spring side face the pressure plate ?
any input would be great.

As far as the clutch goes. I know the stock one is marked "getriedseite" or
something like that on the trans. side. And it has little tabs/ears that stick out a little on the trans. side.
hope that maybe helps a little. keep us informed if you find out this info.
I want to install one come spring time.

As far as gear oil I did a bunch of looking when planning my purchase. UUC recommends using one bottle 75w140ns and then toping off with D4ATL. I know it sounds a bit oddd to use ATF in there, but the theory is that it will reduce, to some degree the amount of chatter you are going to get. Is the clutchmaster a sprung hub clutch? That too will help reduce that chatter you get with the lightened flywheel.
As far as the torque number, the Bentley does not list the ring drive torque spec. Maybe email/call Quaife?

I'm impressed with your decision to do the job yourself! Keep posting photos of the progress! :-)
Did the bearings not come with races? If they did I would replace them for sure!
I will do a Quaife job when I replace my clutch and go with a lighter flywheel for sure!

Here's my blow-by-blow account of this same installation on my car (completed in my garage):

BTW, unless the races are scored or pitted, it is OK to leave the old ones in place. I realize this goes against the better judgement of the bearing manufacturers, but we've been getting away with this for many years now.

Great write up and photos! I can't wait to do my clutch, flywheel, and differential..........but my clutch is fine.
haha
The tranny is together again and in the car. Now I just have to put the rest back together and see how it works.
The Clutchmasters clutch is a spring type and comes with clutch alignment tool and factory SKF throw bearing. Clutch disc does not have markings on it but I installed it with spring side toward pressure plate. The factory FW is 27 Ibs and pressure plate w/disc is 10.5 Ibs. The Clutchmaster FW is 12 Ibs and pressure plate/disc is 12 Ibs... savings of 13.5 Ibs
The races looked good so didn't replace when I installed the Quaife. Replaced both shaft seals but probably didn't have to.
I am also replacing the bushings for upper and lower motor mounts, front control arms and swaybar with powerflex. I can't believe how sloppy the control arm bushings were. Very happy I did those.
I think I will run factory tranny fluid. I have posted some pics in my gallery and will post more latter.
