Everytime you go wider, you have to go down in profile,
or your gear ratios will be completely off

example:
205/45x17
next step is 215/40x17 or 215/45x17
some people run a 225/45x17 but thats a little tall

if you want to go 225/235 and have the same gear ratios,
you will have to find a tire in 35 or 30 profile

another thing to keep in mind factory wheels are 7" wide
designed for 205 or 215,
a 225 or 235 is appropriate on a 7.5 or 8" wheel

hope this helps

I'm curious as to whether 225/45s would fit myself.

In my case I don't care about the gear ratios - on my MINI they're too optimistic by about 9%, so larger tires would simply help them be more accurate.

225/40/R17's are half an inch shorter then stock. While they will throw the speedo a little off, they will help the gearing out a bit.

225/45/R17's are 1/10" taller. You probably will have slight rubbing issues with stock offset rims (et +50).

I was able to run 225/50/16 slicks on +42 offset rims with no rubbing except on extreme cornering where it scuffed the lower control arm paint. These tires are .5" taller then stock.

On the street I run a 225/45/17 on ET40 wheels. I have rubbing in the rear if carrying a heavy load and hit a moderate bump. Hope that helps.

FYI - my sig pic is my AX set up, which is 215's on a 16" wheel, but check my gallery for pics with the 225's on 17's.

Has anybody who's trimmed their rear wheel wells taken pictures when they were doing it? I got, from tire-rack (in no way, their fault, IMO) 215-45-17 Avons, which are awesome). But they did start scraping right away. I took it up to Eric at Helix, who gave me a rear sway bar (it did fix the problem around corners) and showed me the one place in the wheel well that I should worry about damaging the tire.

I didn't mind the scraping (just over big bumps or at high speeds or on terrible Philly roads) until I tried to put 4 people into the car a week ago, and it scraped the whole way to dinner. Now I'm thinking I should fix it so I don't scare my friends.

My garage is cold (not heated) and public, so I'd rather not spend a whole afternoon cursing under my car, and was hoping someone might be able to show (in words or pictures) the way so I can take care of it quickly and efficiently. Is there anything behind the plastic that I should watch out for? How is the outer plastic wheel arch attached to the car, and is removing the wheel well going to loosen it?

Thanks.
