switching pullies without the extra work?
ive been contemplating switching my 15% pulley out for a 19%, and it got me wonderring:
since i used the alta 15% pulley, would it be possible to take the belt off, undo the retaining screws on the face of the pulley, remove the outter 15% portion, slip the new 19% portion back on, and screw it back together without doing the 3/4 engine removal?
Short of going out to the snowy driveway and looking, im just curious if this is a task which is doable? Or do you have to do it the normal way and undo all the engine mounts, etc?

Bugs: Thanks for asking! The biggest difficulties you would face is just getting to the pulley due to the frame rail being in that spot. The extra cursing and swearing may not offset the time to just lift the motor.
However, my strongest recommendation is to purchase our 3 or 4% lower crank pulley instead. This will produce the same level of boost, is FAR easier to install (no engine lifting etc.), also increases throttle response, is the same cost and most importantly, has MUCH better belt wrap vs. a 19% S/C. The 19% pulley has the least amount of belt wrap (area that the pulley is grabbed by the belt and turned). Also, the belt tensioner is better suited to this setup vs. just the 19%.
Hope that helps! Let me know if I can help further!
Thanks again for choosing ALTA Performance Products.

a Bugs, I was able to swap pullies without lifting the motor back up. Might not work if you have a Auto Tranny though, I've heard that the motor sits 1cm farther to the left in the engine compartment and that would shut the door on the swap without lifting the engine.
I swapped the 15% for a 19% without lifting the engine. The only hard part is getting the bolts out of the 15%. After you take the belt off, the pulley spins freely, so you have to have some way to hold it -- and those bolts were really tight on mine. I put a metal pin in each of the two extra holes on the face of the pulley, then put a screwdriver between these to get some torque.
I think if you are familiar with the engine lifting technique, then it is probably faster doing it that way.
I was also on the fence about an over sized crank pulley, but you will need a special tool to get the OEM crank pulley off, and if you screw up the job it is a lot worse than just the S/C. And of course many experienced motor-heads will advise against the undamped crank pulley.

ya, im not sold on the crank pulley. Ive been tempted to get a newer damped OEM pulley from someone whos swapped out, but as for the larger, undamped ones, i am still unsure.
I am considerring the 19%, because I want to do the GIAC+Injectors with it.
Still on the fence with it all. The points Alta made about less contact on the SC is a bit of a concern. I will have to do more thinking.
Thanks for the info and insite guys
