After much research the throttle body is finally closing in on the home stretch. We will be doing dyno testing tomorrow, but the unit functions at all RPM ranges, has no idle problems, and makes a noticeable difference without tripping any service engine soon lights.

I have talked some more with Leitner Performance and they seem quite confident that they can do the work on the MINI's throttle body. Now I have to find some time to rip the throttle body out and bring it to them to see for sure.

From what ive heard it is pretty simple. Maybe 30mins-1hour at most. Just unbolt old- rebolt new.

The throttle body takes a half hour at most to change.

I had the dyno reserved today, but never got away from the phone! I have it as my top priority tomorrow.

I'll be doing some more base runs for the ECU, then testing the throttle body.

We'll see!

I have track time scheduled this week again for more ECU and intercooler data gathering. I'll be sure to post the results of that as well.

Randy says that the throttle body is starting to be made now and soon the first orders will be filled.
The guy who does the upgrades from the stock parts is now well enough to work and the first five units were just sent
out to be redone in California. Hopefully all goes fine and the units can be made in enough supply to meet demand.
Should add about 5HP.

 

How are the throttle body halves being reconnected after the modification work is done? Will it be duct tape, like the item shown in the Mini-Madness catalog?

I saw this up close, its not duct tape. It some sort of metal tape but they tell me that this was just a prototype. Not sure what they will use in the end. Randy, whats your sollution?

 

So far, I have machined two throttle bodies to 61mm, and prepared three machining jigs for production. After the last discussionw with Randy, I am awaiting delivery of a starter lot of stock bodies. The set-up time makes the work do-able (read "affordable&quot only if I can do a minimum run of ten. I have been running one for a month in my car with no problems whatsoever...I'll let others report on the power gains.
The steel band has to be cut off; I add a screw clamp device as part of the tweak.

 

I heard that there were some driveability issues with the 63mm. I believe Madness advertises that TB on their site. Are they indeed for sale? I sort of thought that is why Randy is rolling with the 61...

If someone can enlighten, that would be much appreciated.

Actually, real duct tape (as in heating ducts) typically does have a metal foil outside and does not look like typical duck tape. This is what they probably used.

Yeah, I can't wait to get the TB. Looks like I'll get it about the same time as our Texas pulley install (June 20-21). I'll sure let you know how the TG drives!

Tonyb, The 63mm had idle speed problems so Randy went with 61.5mm and the problem went away. Too much air I guess on the 63 for the ECU-programmed fuel flow.

 

I'll sure let you know how the TG drives!

Maybe future ECU maps can accomodate a 63, and not pose such problems. Time, time, time. Thanks again.

 

I wonder if the idle problems with the 63mm were due to manufacturing/design defects which allowed unexpected air into the inlet tract while under vacuum. An incorrectly seated TB or missing gasket could cause the same idle problems.
