Alta puller chewed up end of supercharger shaft?

I just replaced the pulley on my wife's car, using the ALTA professional pulley puller. It worked fine, but when I got the stock pulley off, I noticed that the large central bolt in the puller that you turn to actually extract the factory pulley had chewed up the bolt-hole in the end of the supercharger shaft. It didn't do any damage to the pulley mating surface, and the new pulley went on without a problem, but I was a little surprised to see the damage.

I guess I should have expected it, since the end of the large bolt is essentially grinding away at the supercharger shaft as you turn it to extract the pulley. Should I have put some kind of sacrificial barrier between the bolt and the end of the shaft, like a large washer? Or should I have screwed a spare bolt into the end of the shaft to take the brunt of the puller's force?

I'm done with my wife's car, and the new pulley hides the damage, but I'm going to be doing another pulley swap on a friend's car this weekend, so if there's anything I missed, I'd like to not make the same mistake twice.

Scott

You definitely want a barrier - aka bolt - in the end of the shaft (and anything that you're using a puller on.)

Ditto, put a bolt into the shaft and all is good.
