TC Questions

What is the cheapest TC kit out there?
Anyone know SPI's website?
Is it expensive to change out pistons and rods?
How is the Alta now, have they made any changes to its design?

I have searched and found answeres to a lot of my questions, but after 45 mins of searching I kinda gave up. Plus I have tried to post 4 times and the forums wont let me... DUNNO WTF is up with that...

Thanks.

The SPI kit has been relabled the FTR kit. Check out fireballed racing's website. There kit is deffinately the most complete.

You don't need to swap the rods unless you want to rev over 8500. Pistons are a great idea. I believe they are about $850 or so...

Alta is the least expensive to intially get into the TC arena, but in the end you will end up spending about the same.

Supposively the Alta kit has a 3rd revision header coming out to aid in the cracking issues they have been expirencing. I am waiting for mine any day now.....

How do you like that turbo? What rpm do you spool at? It's the GT3071R right?

yeah its the 3071R... Its big....a real nice turbo....but maybe a bit big for the 1.6l. It spools up hard around 4k till redline. Its spooling ok down low, but u deff know its there when u mash the gas around 4k it will plant u in the seat.

Ryephile used the 3071R at first and said it spooled to slow coming out of the turns at the dragon. I believe he is switching or has switched it out to the 2871R.

Well his 3071r had a smaller inlet. To each his own but I don't mind a little lag... Brake boosting helps a lot....

Sorry to say this, you won't get the header soon at least that's what alta said. Maybe in Dec this is BULL **** I'm getting my 2 gen tomorrow and if that one fail, no TC for me, turbo only with Spillman or perhaps Ryephile's help

I think the turbo only solution will become more popular as someone develops the kit...... does anyone have a tq curve to look at? I have heard 2500 up is flat on some which is damn nice.... Rhyphiles kit is like jewelry under the hood..... can you get variable vector vanes for the Mini??

Did you wipe down the manifold with alcohol before installing it? It helps to remove all the oil on it so the manifold "burns" evenly. I have yet to have any cracks in my manifold almost 10k miles later. However I am currently using the SPI exhaust manifold.

manifold

Spillman, the manifold was ceramic coated and after less than 150 miles it cracked at the weld on cylinder 3. Between cylinder 2 and 3 they welded a brace to support the turbo but I know of another TC guy who's cracked the same place.

That manifold probably wont work with our turbos as they are to large to fit that high. Now that is speculation since they are designed to work with the gt2871r. now if you wanna swap out the the turbo.....then go for it!!!

Yeah I will confirm Andrew's statment about the headers cracking. They are cracking along the welds only. I drove mine around for a while with a cracked weld, then when Alta said they were sending me the new one, I pulled it out, only to find almost all of the welds underneath it to be cracked.

I will post pix of the cracked manifold tomorrow. I will be talking to fireball team tomorrow and get some ideas. Would you be interested in a SPI manifold? or planning single turbo in the near future?

that type of weld cracking is why Stahl brazes the outside fillet on their headers.

no, haven't made it to the dyno yet. Access to a dyno is like a pot of gold here. There's only one shop has the dyno and a bunch of 20 year old owns the shop and import drift cars. Get the picture?
