Drivetrain JCW kit FACTS
There is no doubt a segment of the market that the JCW kit fills.
Kevin,
You are welcome to stay right in my guest room here at the house (and I offer that to all of my out of town customers)!
Chris,
The ECU facet is being worked on, and we are very close now to finding a solution. That's the last step of the horsepower equation. This isn't a couple of guys throwing together a package in their garage either - all of the tuning and development is EXTREMELY tested and we have rocket scientists (literally) working on the stuff.
2minis,
The pads and fluid go a long way, and it would have been cheap for them to do at the factory... I recommend the pads and fluid as a minimum to all the folks I sell a pulley.
Here is the "Ultimate Motorsport" package:
H-Sport springs
Madness rear swaybar
Stage 1 brake kit
Intake
ECU
Pulley
Ported and polished head with or without larger valves
Schrick or reground cam (the Schrick just got here)
London Stainless header with high flow cat
Cat back exhaust
16" wheel/tire package
Some of the components above are still in the testing and endurance phase, and I am always happy to build a package for each customer (I'm actually working on providing a Motorsport plaque for each car developed to go in the interior with a limited series number). You can even go crazier than this by adding the flywheel/clutch package, the Quaife LSD, the new brake package that uses the Brembos (still in development) and the LEDA coilovers. If you want to spend money, I can burn through it with the best!
BTW, I have done 4 pulley installs this week, all under $500 which included the pulley.
Give me a call if you have any questions.

>>Dude, go buy your subaru and be happy.
Actually I am buying a Mini S thank you.
Read and actually digest before you jump on me like a loose scrap of meat and miss my point. I never claimed the Subaru is better, my claim is that their "factory/dealer" kit seems to offer an aftermarket package for WAY less(half the price including installation) that is virtually similar parts with similar results and a warranty intact. It is basically a JCW kit for a subaru.
The aftermarket for the cooper S is going to provide a much more cost effective solution in just a few months to the JCW. All I ever said was that the cost doesn't justify the results.
You are paying for a name and BMW labor costs. Happy marketing to you.
I will stick to the rocket scientists at APR. They have been tuning VW/Audi's with a lot of success for a while now.
Hey Randy, any thoughts on talking to the guys at Stratmosphere and doing something similar to the REVO software for the Mini?? That would be pretty amazing if it was possible.
>>>>
>>>>Yeah, it does. The 0-60 time is faster for the WRX, and the 50-70mph time is faster for the JCW S. So it's about a wash. And the S still looks alot better.

>>
>>Actually, that 50-70mph is in 5th gear for the WRX! Very little turbo boost at the RPOM range! I bet in third it would be half that time!

Oh, I know. Just having a little fun with ol' Puffs.

I have to say that up until this thread I was full on FOR the JCW package but now realizing what is actually provided I have to return from the dark side. I originally thought that the SC was larger and there was a cam provided as well (apparently not).
For perspective. I can get the Hartge kit (pulley and optimized ECU for 210hp), add on a Supersport exhaust, Madness air intake, performance brake pads and rotors, new rear sway bar and maybe even a Sterling exhaust header (all adding substantial power along the way) and I'd still be spending about the same $$ as the JCW and have a more powerful and better handling car in the end.
At least that's what I think today...

Jim: Good points. Only probelm is Hartge doesn't seem to be available in the US, at least not in any way that would be covered under a warranty of any kind (Hartge or BMW). Unless I'm missing something.

Helix says they are in the beginning stages of talks with Hartage and I think are even installing a kit. So stay tuned....maybe they'll be good news!

Randy and I saw a MINI Cooper S with the Hartge kit on Saturday at our local autocross. It kind of struck me a little odd that someone would put that kind of money into a MINI, show up at an autocross, and then *not* compete.
I found this over on Roadfly of all places
miniqueen for those that don't know is MINI Motoring Manager Lori Abrams at Westchester MINI. I bought my MINI from her, and she's been nothing but accurate in what she's posted.

A loaded, and I mean loaded (including all three packages, metallic paint, nav computer, auto wipers, HK Stereo, R90 wheels, Aero Kit, clear tail lights, rally lights, etc.) MCS from the factory costs over 30k and that number doesnt even include the labor to install the dealer extras or the JCW kit. Depending upon how much the dealer charges I'd guess about 36k after tax. Bare bones is probably about 21k.

>>I guess we can make up those costs with our gas mileage vs. the competition...
What is really ourtageous is that I've seen several Coopers at my dealer what were all decked out like this. After labor they must have been over 30k. I know we are paying for the name brand but come ON

The latest kicker for me was that on top of the $4500 MSRP, and the $1000-1200 installation cost, the core requirement, and the taxes, the dealer then charges you the shipping to return your core head and supercharger!!
Don't get me wrong, as I said before, there is a market for this. I just wish the kit included more for that cost (like an LSD and some brake and suspension tweaks).
I am also in negotiations with the sole US Hartge distributor, but honestly, for the money I can make more hp and a better rounded kit on my own. The Hartge kit is $2800 and includes software, a modified supercharger (a real modification unlike the JCW kit) and a reduction pulley.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

I was at the car show in NYC today...
The MINI booth was done up well.
The Works car was unpressive...IMHO
The rims are not very nice in person, I was laying on my **** looking under the car at the exhaust (no surprise there huh...lol)which looked substancial and the tips were....plenty nice.., & I opened the bonnet and was kinda reprimanded...as I wanted to see the new supercharger.
I've attached a copy of the Works handout..
I scanned it..
It's a bit large....so have some fun sizing it.
The gold color MINI was there....I'm not too sure if I liked it...
I unfortunately didn't take pic's, as I left my digital camera home...
I'm sure someone else from NY will post em...soon.
Beleive it or not my favorite car was...... the new Chevy SS....what a beauty !!!!!!, and the Aston Martins were not toooo shabby either...nor was the rag top 350Z.
Peace,
D

Off topic, but a skyline for 25k on EBay. That sounds like crap to me. Where are they located first off and secondly if they are in the US then have they been legalified (whatever). It's probably only an R32 anyways, if it is for real.
Sorry, continue.
Sorry, continue.

>>Need we address it again.
>>
>>This is tru...the STI runs about $7 more than the WRX but addresses HP (big time!), handling, stopping (brakes), AND looks (to a degree). And I thought the STI was overpriced compared to the WRX. But at least they made all around improvements and not just 37 horses!!!!
>>
>>more like 8k, but it is still in a whole new ballpark of performance for less than the cost of a Mini of equal balance.
It also addresses the WRX's bad habit of blowing up gearboxes cause they can't cope with the power. The trade off of course being the extra 40kg of weight they had to throw into it to make it take the power of the STi
BTW, the STi is an awesome machine.. but my Mini is much more chuckable around corners or on a track
PS. First timer, looks like a pretty cool board...

We need Randy to come to Atlanta... I have my money waiting! Im ready for many mods to my MCS! I dont really know to much about these cars... reading everything to learn more.... Thanks for all the post about the JCW! I think im leaning towards a Randy special!!!!
The R32 is a very cool car, but don't expect it to hold a candle to the MCS (Works or otherwise) in the twisties. There are some serious limitations to the A4/1J Golf platform.
The R32 is more grip over handling, handling is what I love about my Cooper S,you can really chuck it about..the R32 is a very very good car.
