hot air extractor

Been working on this for awhile, same idea as the louvres but:
1)I dont have the guts to cut into my bonnet
2)It closes up the other side of the cowl space(driverside used for CAI scoop)
3)I may be able to duct it to my DFIC arriving this week

It is still awork in progress and has only been on the car for two weeks, I can say that after my 15 miles comute and the car at iddle you could cook a hot dog on that grill really work in static but no numbers yet as I dont have the tools.

Your expansion tank is leaking at the seam; they have a fix for that.
Keep up the good work, interesting.

I would hesitate to use that to vent the DFIC.
That area is under slight positive pressue at speed which would not be ideal for extracting heat.
The wall you have in front of the cowl will have some impact on that but honestly I'm not sure what. Gut instinct tells me it will increase pressue slightly.
I would really like to see measurements on this. Very nice piece and nice work. I'd like to know what it really does.
Regardless it's good stuff.

Looks good, but be careful. Those two vents are there for a reason, they are vents. Where you installed this, you are blocking the heat from exiting the chamber where your ABS controller and brake lines are.

As for the design, if you lay it back on the top a bit, rather than turning straight up, it will be more effective. Think louvers.

wow... man this looks really good, you did that by yourself!! and what about the CAI scoop... did you do it too? and is it all CB. although I might say that I agree with Will from M7 as you will get more air suction if you tilt the top back towards the windshield. If you keep the speed of the air flowing smoothly on top of the hood then accelerate it with a tilted fin, then it will suck the air inside the engine bay better. kind of the same effect as an airplane wing producing lift. all in all, it look great and I want a CAI scoop like that? tell me more. cheers

awsome job ; that piece in the front of cowl noisy at all lol? ( not jamming just had a thought that in this crowd who'd care about noise) . put some red string on the cowl take it up to speed and snap a shot of the string going up the windshield.

I agree with Obe here. This is a high pressure area and those vents are designed for in-flow rather then ext-flow. It would be interesting to get a video camera in there with a bunch of yarn telltales to see what the air flow was actually doing.

My vote is that the deflector that carbonized built creates low(er) pressure in the cowl behind it, drawing more air out than normal.

my vote; it will cause massive turbulence just behind it . but low pressure. then the high pressure from the wind screen will crush it like a bug . so there will be this little 1 inch low pressure area fighting for its' very life. passes blunt to the left,.

I make a master, then a mold off the master, then I vacuum bag parts in the mold. simple enought

JYM
cant have one it's not proven yet, never mind in production!

ca$per
yes the scoop is all carbon and every carbon parts on my car is "made in the shed" behind my house

minut
You are geting hot That deflector is called a Gurney flap in the racing world it is usualy seen on the tailing edge of wing

Will
I am aware of the cooling of the ABS block. after 25 min of Sebring it wasn't even worm, did that 3 time the same day! so as it still get some fresh air from the driver side, I'm not too worryed about it ,but I keep an eye on it.

obe,Herbie
I have done the tell-tale thing, and since I don't have a digital video camera, I used the "hanging out of the sun roof at 65 mph" method. You think the windshield slope is the culprit? You should have seen what hapened when I grabed and lifted the wiper arm!
Any way it's just a first shot at the concept, I know it need more work .
By the way The gurney has to be upright to work best, I know it is not the best for drag butit creates a higher "ventury" and every thing is a compromise.
Right now I'm happy to know that at the traffic light hot air has a chance to escape instade of cookink my IC

nice job . hope to see some of your stuff for sale. if carbon is a better insulater than plastic can i assume you're gonna make me a box with top for my k&n filter.? oh and while we're doing a christmas list ...pls' design a better ;less convoluted(nice word .i know .got it here on nam ) intake path to the box?

So, where the high pressure and low pressure areas come together between the windshield and the Gurney flap, will it be possible for thunderstorms or tornadoes to form at 43mph during a hard left turn if enough humidity is present? bah-da-boom!

Thanks, I'll be here all week. And don't forget to tip your waiter.

You can't say CF is a better insulator than plastic until you qualify the plastic.
For instance the plastic of the stock air box is a better insulator than CF.
It's been discussed here before.
CF isn't all that great an insulaltor by itstelf.
