Drivetrain cold air intakes for cooper
ive read in past threads that there arent any cold air intakes for the base cooper? is this true? is there some reason why there would be a different type of intake for the cooper than the S? and whats the best cold air intake for the cooper out there? thanx again guys
The Cooper's intake is located in a different location than the Cooper S's. Due to this a "cold air box" is not possible. But there are a couple neat alternatives out there.
There's the Viper Pipercross.

yeah, kinda like a thing-a-ma-hoppy, but not at all your standard widget ...
Davbret - just looked at their site, and they have a part no. for a Cooper ..... is Madness revising that??
If Madness needs a Cooper to test it on ..... i might have one available ...

The Green Filter is ready - but untested just yet. It is a very promising set-up for the Cooper. I also have the new CDA box from BMC (of F1 fame) that will be here next week. New BMC panel filters will be tested as well for the Cooper and S. I'll keep everyone updated.

The Mini Mania system is designed to maximize the ram air intake in the Cooper. It features their foam air filter element. I don't know about the performance numbers, but I think Grassroots liked it, although they couldn't use it for autocross competition.

Randy. That's the kind of news I've been waiting for. I already have a Pipercross Viper but I'm not really impressed...in fact, I've been surfing for news on the Green Twister/Dynatwist and the BMC CDA, so you made my day. I like the Green filters a lot, thank goodness that shiny cover comes in different colors though - I really don't like the idea of something that big under the hood all in polished aluminum (I think I'm allergic to chrome...and anything that looks like it). The BMC unit is my sentimental favorite, I hope it works well. Looking forward to your report!
hey i just checked up on the mini-madness site right now and the green twister intake is out! its a little cheaper than the pipercross but its still a lotta $$$! has anyone purchased it yet? are there any dyno graphs out yet?

The Cooper definitely has an airbox. If you just want to replace the stock panel filter with an aftermarket version you open the airbox, make the swap, and put the lid back on. If you want to switch to something like the Pipercross Viper, or the newer Green Twister or the BMC CDA you have to remove the entire stock aribox. Some of these use some or all of the stock air ducting/pipes, others replace the whole works. The Viper replaces the box only and uses all of the the other original bits. From the pic at Mini-Madness it looks like the Green also replaces the stock intake duct.
I've got a Cooper, and was under the impression that an intake wouldn't do much to improve its zip, as kurvhugr seemed to say. I put on a Remus exhaust for the sound, not the performance, as again, from everything I've read, any gains in performance from an exhaust system w/ the Cooper are going to be slight. If the Green Twister makes a sound difference, I'm interested, and if it makes a performance difference, I'm VERY interested. 2 questions for folks who have put the Pipercross on their Cooper: what differences did it make (performance, sound), and how hard is the mod?
Whatever the "airbox mod" is (sounds like an S thing to me), an MC can't have the stock airbox and one of these replacements at the same time - have to remove one to make room for the other.
Also, I think I should clarify something I wrote earlier. When I said I wasn't terribly impressed with the Pipercross Viper that was because of the way it's mounted (I call it the Home Depot method). Though I'm sure Pipercross' claim of 12bhp is an exageration to say the least, my seat-of-the-pants dyno tells me it DOES make a noticeable difference...wish I had real dyno results for you, but I don't. Sound is minimal since the Viper's enclosed carbon fiber/plastic canister attenuates sound like the stock box does. Green's Twister canister is metal so it may transmit sound instead.

I have the standard pipercross cone filter, and it is incredibly easy to install/remove. It also sounds great:D . The only real differece performance wise is that it feels a little more responive in the lower rev range. And it is cheap, only 129 at moss motors.

The airbox mod is an S thing only. The CDA will be here this week, and we have dyno time scheduled (if I can get a Green Twister here in time, I'll throw that up too).
I'll keep my Cooper friends posted.
Randy
PS: Would the winner of the Pipercross replacement filter e-mail me with your contact info (and I know who the winner was, so don't try to fake me out with a bogus address!)?

I purchase the piper. It did give me more power. The only problem it is made cheaply and when I tried to pull out the filter it broke. The Green Twister looks to be better made. I have odered the BMC Cabon box, the quality seems much better.
The Piper looks much better in the picture than the real thing, cheap plastic with a cheap foam filter. About five dollars of part for $300.00? I will let you know how the BMC works out.

Hello CSP4,
I am sorry about your experience with the Viper Kit. I have to say that you are one of a rare few.
The Viper Kit consists of a Foam Filter element that is secured in a Carbon Fiber Housing. The Carbon Fiber does not retain the heat that is radiated under the bonnet. Thus, allowing for cooler air to reach the throttle body. The inlet hose allows for more air to pass through to the throttle body. The Viper is the one of the first only CAI on the market. In the UK this same set up has been ran on WRC for years. The foam element is a high flow filter that filters consistently .1 micron.
In fact, I run the Viper, straight to my Hood Scoop. Which allows me to get true Forced Cold Air Induction.
During the Heavy Rains that we have had here in San Diego over the past few months, I have never experienced any stalling or hesitations. Even when I was driving behind a Semi, getting thrown around and beaten, wipers at full speed, on the Highway, in a heavy down fall.
Now, I have been running the same filter element for over 25,000 miles with no problems. I will not clean it until I reach 50,000 just to see what will happen and how it will perform up to that point.
The filter element is a lifetime filter with suggested cleaning every 20,000-30,000 miles and that is on the low side.
The foam filter element was never meant to be pulled out of the Carbon Fiber Housing. Both, inlet and outlet are made of spun aluminum. Each end cap consists of two separate pieces. All of which: the Filter Element, Carbon Fiber Housing, the two, two piece spun aluminum end caps are manually fitted and put together at the factory. (First hand knowledge. My partner Cy flew to the UK before we decided to carry this product to see the process and how they did everything.)
So, what you call a, Cheap Plastic, is indeed, Carbon Fiber. And what you call, Cheap Foam, is the same foam that JCW uses in their Cooper "S" package in the UK. As they use a Pipercross Panel filter.
So, I am surprised that someone at Pipercross was unable to help you out. If you had attempted to contact me. I am sorry for not being able to answer you call or to work with you on this matter. My latest software product release went into crisis mode over the a few months ago.
Again, Pipercross and Pipercross USA are real sorry about your experience with the Viper. You are the first person that I have heard of, that has had a bad experience using this product.
Thanks,
Tracy

Tracy - have anyone at your company data temp'd the Viper kit? We data logged a few cold air kits here and really found that there was significiant heat soak during city/street driving conditions and not much in terms of "cold air" benefits.
I have not tested the Viper kit, but I would like to see what kinds of data you would see at the TB, pre-filter and start of intake track. Or maybe a test of the Viper kit with intake hose on and off to see if there is a difference.
Just a thought.

Why would I spend $300.00+ on some fancy-schmancy cabon fiber "tupperware"!?

The Blue Potato,
Have you considered the location of the stock cold air intake? After a ten minute drive stop and feel the heat off the radiator. Just above this you are supposed to intake "cold air"? I dont think so. The Viper comes with to thin of hoses. Although better than most, but you can purchase much better from the Hose Man in SO. California.

So, I have been running the viper for almost a year now. About heat soak. I can say that when I was running a Cone filter only, last summer, I would not be able to touch the tin top of the cone filter. It would be too hot. On the Viper with the alluminum inlet and outlet ends I was able too touch them.
It is not so much the thickness of the inlet tube as it is the contunuous flow of cool air that also keeps the heat down. But also, how much cooler can it get when the outside temp in San Diego averages over 80 degrees and it gets even hotter out in the desert.
When I was running the cone last summer, I always lost perfomance when my engine heated up. When I replaced it with the Viper. I lost a little off the line when cold. But the gains when the engine was hot made up the difference
Now, yes a SAMCO gel hose would be great. I have been talking to them. But, the COST, less then jobber price, is still too pricey to be added in our kit. As the price increase would have to be passed to the consumer.
I guess we all should be happy that we live in the US. The retail cost for performance parts in the UK are far greater then here. Example: The Viper Kit retails for 250 pounds in the UK, which is 375 usd on a good market day.
Chris thanks for the info. Maybe we can get a different hose at a better price. The less Pipercross has to ship over the big blue ocean to the U.S. means better price points for everybody.
