You'd be surprised at the pre-SC temps that you can see....

And even after it passes through the IC, it's still quite warm.

I've been noticing how the intake-to-throttle-body tube is almost untouchable after a hard run in warm weather! I guess not shocking since it practically touches the pre-IC horn at one point.

Anyone bought one of those lace-up wrap things for their intake tube?

GT Tuning.
Not cheap but very nice.
If you get them make sure you warm them up well before installation. They're very stiff. Which is a good thing IMO.

Yes the clamps and bolts(stainless) are polished

Awesome thread. This is the kind of thing I'm always looking for. Low-cost DIY.

Yup, not even close to relating to cheap.

Very stiff, is a great thing. Hey? Where are we going with this??

The thing I don't like about the Alta boots, is no snug fit. Now we're in trouble.

Kind of a 2 way post..... thought dependant.....

Yep.
They are the only ones I know of that are shaped properly and not just round chunks of tubing.
Much less IC movement with them installed.

So today, after removing the IC and cleaning it, I began to shield the CAI pipe (right next to the IC boot) with reflective aluminum tape as well as the bottom area of the IC. After carefully taping all of these parts, I realized that the tape's adhesive could be flammable... and after a short flame test on a piece of the tape burned all the adhesive off of the bottom in about 30 seconds, I am now going to remove all of this flammable tape from my car.
In short, be sure that whatever insulation you are using is NOT flammable (especially the adhesive). I'm ordering some high temp insulation materials from Pegasus Racing.

I shielded my Alta CAI with the adhesive-backed aluminum / glass fiber insulation from Pegasus racing. It keeps the in-the-box temps very cool. My finger dyno suggests about 10 degrees cooler.

What's the insulation difference between the gold foil and the aluminum stuff? They say nothing about the reflection value on the aluminum foil but say that it can withstand 2000 degrees. The gold reflects 79% and can withstand 675 degrees for 8 hours.

I'm assuming the gold will reflect much better than the aluminum so it should be used on the airbox. The aluminum can withstand much higher temps so that is what should be used on the intercooler and intake manifold.

i guess if you've got a fire under the hood ;you've got bigger problems than your intake hose burning. as to it's flash point ;it's probably pretty high as it's used commercially. just don't start any camp fires under your hood.

The aluminum heat-shield tape from Pegasus reflects 80% of heat. After a long drive the inside of the air box feels much cooler than before I applied the heat shield.

Good to know. I guess there's no point then in paying the extra money for the gold foil when the aluminum does just as well.

From the nerd desk...

Really fresh Al reflects about the same as gold. But the Al oxidizes, and this really screws the UV and a few IR wavelengths... If you're nasa, or spending someone elses money, go for the gold.... Another item is that you can make gold into a usefull film that is thinner than Al, meaning you don't need to use as much to make a good reflector (that's one of the reasons Nasa went for it)....

Anyway, it doesn't really matter for our apps, most of the heat is moved around via conduction (touching hot things) and convection (hot air touching things) and not radiation (glowing heat off the surface via IR radiation). The reflective is nice once things get hot enough to glow... So around header/turbo systems is will reject the radiated heat from these very hot parts....

Over and out from the nerd desk....

Matt

So, I did the IC and intake insulation....

but with a GP IC that has a thermal dispersant coating.... I have too little space to post photos....

Next will be the scoop diverter mod....

Is this a stock Mini GP IC?
