Drivetrain OBX header - cut off OEM cat
OBX header - cut off OEM cat
i am looking for somebody that can help me with the install of my OBX header to my car.
I can not find any how toos for this header specifically ?
i have a few questions needs resloving from people with instalation experience.
1st . Where exactly do i cut off the OEM cat of the OEM header ? Should it be cut off really close to the cat, or just after the oem weld bed, or somewhere in the middle, between the weld bed and cat ?
2. Should i replace the bolts by screws ?
3. Should these bolts or screws be tightened very much ? Or not too tight ?
4. does anybody have any fitment issues to share ?
5. How do i prevent any leaks ?
6. before welding the adapter to the oem cat, should i first measure it all up underneath the car ? By installing the header and installing the oem cat back in place......
7. can i reuse the packing between the oem cat and the catback system

it's long, but you should find out everything you need to know.

You should go with a high-flow cat. They are fairly cheap (or can be). One of the ebay stores that sells the header/MC exhaust HAS high flow-cats for sale also. That will be my route. Leave the OEM one alone.
Agreed! Plus it will sound better, and possibly perform slightly better.
I am running an OBX header with stock cat. The car runs good and I could definitely tell an improvement in midrange torque, but if I were to do it again, I would go straight pipe; I might even change it this winter if I have time to.

Couple of questions. I have a Borla Exhaust (non sport) and OBX Header ready to go on my 05 MCSC. Helix is doing the install and is talking about using the OEM cat. If I use a high flow CAT:
1. Will I throw any codes?
2. will I pass emmissions
3. Do we need a 14" or a 16"? I found these on ebay is one of these correct?

4. How much louder will it be? TIA, Michael

I used this cat: Magnaflow high flow cat #94136 that cost 60 bucks. I have had it in with the OBX since the 16th and have no cel's.
Here is the DIY I used to install the header: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...ead.php?t=5403
And here is a thread about my install: http://www.motoringunderground.com/f...ead.php?t=3032

I have the OBX exhaust and stockcat and am very pleased. I have had no code issues and the cat is holding up just fine (24m total and 10m with the header).
Just let Eric do his thing
. If it was adverse Helix would NOT be taking that route

I don't know if it really does change the emissions, but it is an OBD II certified cat. I searched for the cat on ebay and went with the cheapest price, I can't rember what it was called. Someplace in Va. I got the part # from the massive OBX thread on NAM. When the cat is installed, it needs to be turned a little to give the O2 sensor room.
Batrugger, Yeah I foud two guys selling the magnaflow cat 94136, one for $60 and one for $47. Seems to me to be a far cheaper, perhaps better performance than cutting off the old cat. BTW did you pwder coat the header to reduce heat? Michae;
No, I just installed it as is and used the factory heat shield. When you install the header, make sure you lay the heatshield on top of it before you bolt it on. I didn't do it and it was a ***** to install it from the top of the engine after the header was bolted up.
The powdercoat decision (or thermo raps for that matter) is NOW
.
I like batrugger - didn't do it either. If I had to do it over I think I would have done the thermo raps (minimal expense) but no regrets passing on the powdercoat (too much $$ - for me spending 200 to thermo coat a 200 header did not compute
).

should the heatshield under the car need to be cut a little , to make the obx header fit perfectly.... or not ???
by the way i am a COOPER driver....
appreciate the replies
and i am well aware of the other obx thread , but i find it just a little to massive to find my answers too my questions fast ... cheers
I have a 02' MC and installed the OBX header earlier this year. To date, it is the best mod for YakiMini.......If you have any questions I'd love to answer them for you....I posted alot on it at a different site and I don't know if I'm allowed to mention the site openly???

There should be no reason at all to cut the heat shield under the Mini. I cannot remember which one, but I adviz that you remove one of them to get the header in place. It is a tight fit but it will work....

Tight fit is understatement - there is like ONEWAY to insert the header (specific horizontal and vertical angle) and when you find it - it pops in.
It took two of us 20 minutes to find it. CLUE - pay attention on how the stock header came out !
From a different thread...
"For example serious hard core racers have been known to tape their exhaust headers in the engine bay with thermal insulation tape and while that produces a cooler engine bay eventually it destroys the header which is all taped up because the heat has no where to go except out to the exhaust."
Is this true?
