Lightweight Crank Pulley

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mini...1QQcmdZViewItem

I saw this on eBay and its a pretty good price, but i wonder about this mod, even if i get it i wont put it on for a while probably but is it a worthwhile mod? its says its the stock size so it wont interfere with the way the car runs but i am worried about doing something like this to my engine and causing warranty issues or driveability issues. Any thoughts or opinions?

I havent started researching it here yet, but i have heard that alot of people put the OEM one back on after a while due to the pulley not being dampened or something like that.

I fail to understand why people always go price first and quality later. Unless you are filthy rich there is no value in shooting for just the lowest price item made out of (perhaps) cheap materials and then (likely) get upset later when these parts fail, or worse, cause the failure of other parts as well.

I am concerned about price - but I am way more concerned about quality of workmanship, materials used, and (very important) the reputation of the vendor you ae purchasing from. Unless it is a well known and tested product from a well known and tested vendor that just happens to be o Ebay, I will not purchase it, believe me, I've learned many lessons from prior experience with what I thought was a good deal on something that looked as good as the real thing.

My favorite Vendor so far is M7 - you can trust their research, their materials, and their support for what they sell. At least go there first, and then judge their stuff against what else you find.

I'll step off my pulpit now.

The pulley from from someone off eBay did you even look at it? Its a Alta 0% pulley so i am looking at not just price but quality and i like Alta. I just mentioned it cause it happens to be a pretty cheap price for that Alta which retails for $150. I was just curious cause i was told there were long term issues with lightened crank pulleys that are undampened like the OEM one is.

IrishCooper,

Do the thread search under "crank pulley"- there's a lot of discussion out there. I think that the bottom line is that there have been no "long term" reports of engine or component failure, but there are no reports of people with 75,000 miles on their crank pulleys either (if I'm wrong, feel free to chime in). Mdsbrain reported strange engine characteristics and had his pulley removed, but he thinks it may have been because his CVT was getting confused due to the pulley's free revving properties. I recall one person had his pulley come off on the track, but he admits to improperly torquing the retaining bolt. Finally, the stock harmonic balancers (pre '05 at least) have recently been shown to fail according to recent posts. Bottom line- although there has been a lot of doom and gloom talk associated with this part, you won't find a thread shouting out " LIGHTENED CRANK PULLEY RUINED MY ENGINE."

No, I tried to take a look at it and the link has expired at Ebay.
Many have testified of no problems at all in thousands of miles and months of use. I have not sen any problems with mine, nor have I heard of problems except from those that theorize that a problem surely must occur. Bologna!

Alta makes a good one, and surely the 0% is a safe bet. You will realize a big difference in freedom to rev from lowering the revolving weight of the crank pully.
