Drivetrain Alternative to Webb Exhaust?
Alternative to Webb Exhaust?
Found video clip guy with VW R32 that has an exhaust with adjustable valve like Webbs. It looks like it can be added to any exhaust.

Valve available from http://dmhperformance.com/

If you can find another company who will make a 3" exhaust, then yes. Its hard to muffle, which is probably why you don't see more.
The R32s come with a valve from the factory too. Just not like that. I believe its vacuum operated... Great sound!

You can get electronic cutouts from alot of places, but not alot of places have a 3 inch exhaust system, that is stainless (i think its stainless
) and has a cutout built into it for the MCS. That is pre fitted and already muffled well enough to drive on the street, that is until you uncap the right side straight pipe.
Sure there is plenty of options out there, just depends on if you want to do the work or have it all done for you.

True, not many 3" systems out there. However, you could also go custom. And if that isn't what you want, you could have the cutout welded in right before the T or Y split in any aftermarket exhaust and it'd be straight through as well. Difference on the dyno between a 2.5" straight exhaust or a 3"? Who knows, but I can tell you it won't be too much. And it'd still be well muffled for street driving when closed.
Not bashing on the Webb as I love the sound and the fact that their trying something different for the MINI. However, exhaust cutouts are certainly nothing new...

"And the cop is right behind us now..." Where does this sound familiar? Hmmm maybe from driving around town with the cutout open on my exhaust...
8 different times in the last 2 weeks, I've been followed. It's almost becoming routine. Oh well they don't write me a ticket and I don't do anything stupid to cause them to and I'm fine.

Although i plan to make my own custom exhaust in the future, there is alot of problems when going with custom. For one its hard to find a shop that has stainless pipe ready to be mandrel bent to any angle you need. If you can find a shop to do this, it is normaly expensive and labor intensive. Most of the time, if its a "nice" custom exhaust it ends up costing just as much as a aftermarket if not more. Also most muffler shops use aluminized steel to cut down on costs. I could be wrong, but i dont think you can weld alumanized steel and stainless together? you might be able to, i guess it depends on how thick the coating is?
Also unless you have made alot of custom exhausts before, getting the right mufflers/resonators to make a pleasent sound is a bit tricky. With a pre-manufactured exahust, this combo is already worked out for you. You could easily end up spending alot of coin very fast and turn out with an exhaust that sounds like crap.
just a few things to think about when going custom.

Mine can be replicated for less than 600 bucks:

Plus a 2.5 extension for a few buck, then a Borla Turbo muffler

With the removal of the battery box, no special bends are needed! Throw in a tip, and a few bucks for welding, and she's done.
An early photo, while experimenting:
